“You hide them in the secret place of Your presence from the conspiracies of man; You keep them secretly in a shelter from the strife of tongues.” Psalm 31:20 NASB
A dry light house in the midst of the roaring ocean. It’s off the well-worn and certainly beaten path. It’s Jesus’ place. He mans the light house. It’s a place where you can run to, throw open the always unlocked door, and call out to Jesus, “I’m here!” He’ll beckon you to come on up. Grab a dry pair of clothes, a chair, a warm cup of java or chocolate, and He’ll welcome you to stay for as long as you like.
The room is warm and well lit, so you settle in and He begins to ask you how you’re doing. You look out the window and point at the crashing waves because you can hardly get anything out of your mouth. He understands. Then He proceeds to tell you that He allowed the storm to rage. You’re beside yourself. You almost didn’t make it to Him in time because of it. How could He? I mean, I could’ve died!
He replies, “But you forget that I know your strengths and weaknesses, and I’m also the One in control of the storm. I knew you would make it.”
And with that reply you calm down and walk over to the glass where Jesus is standing and you stand in awe of the height of the waves and the fury of the roar. They splash against the glass, and then you get a glimpse of the next wave that’s coming in the distance when the light on top of the house spots it. “What about that Jesus? Look what’s coming next?” you reply.
“Stay here for a while, my child.”
Trusting Him, you sit and relish in His presence. You unload everything on Him as He sits and listens. And while you’re busy unloading, you realize that you’re untouchable! Everything that threatened your life moments before, can’t reach you. The ocean is still furious and the waves keep trying to consume you, but the glass around you and Jesus causes it to halt and come no further. Upon noticing this, you begin to tell Jesus what you’ve just realized. You are UNTOUCHABLE by anything in the secret place of His presence.
How did I not realize this before?
“You were busy. And now you’re tired, so rest for awhile.” So you curl up on a couch and rest. You hear Jesus calm your fears, give your situation purpose, encourage you in the battle, reassure you that when you leave, He’ll go with you, and when you return, He’ll always be here. All this because He loves you.
When you are well rested, you’ll leave His presence relieved and replenished. You open the door to the light house and skip down the road back to your everyday life knowing that you’re invited to return to the secret place everyday, storm or no storm. And when others look on your unbearable situations with amazement because of your endurance, you’ll have a chance to tell them about your secret place and the One who resides there.
Lord Jesus, thank you for the secret place of Your presence and treasures you reveal to me when I sit there with you. May sitting in Your presence be my delight. May you be my treasure. Thank you for loving me so much. Amen.
