Do you remember your night dreams the day after they occur? Most of us don’t remember them, but if we do, our recollection is usually brief and lacking in detail.
However, during the night of July 23, 2007, I had a dream that I won’t soon forget. Even now, days after it occurred, I have such a vivid memory of everything in my dream that it’s almost like a video tape being re-played in my head. It’s with much hesitation that I write about it for fear others would say, “Well, he must have eaten too much hot chili,” or “He’s watching too many horror movies.” But…I assure you it seemed so very real, and I believe there is a message from my experience that must be shared.
The setting for the dream was a late evening in my house with all the rooms and furniture positioned exactly as they have been for years.
In my dream I remember standing in the master bedroom located at one end of the house. My wife and our dog were in the room with me. She was reading a book while relaxing in her favorite chair beside the fireplace. The dog was lying nearby on the soft carpet with her head resting on her front paws – probably thinking about her next treat.
Suddenly through only one window, I saw a flash of lightning. More of them followed the first one. They weren’t bolts of lightning – just flashes of light. Then I heard distant rolling thunder that seemed to be getting louder and more frequent with each second that passed. I recall moving to another window only to find that the flashes of light and thunder seemed to move along with me. I thought it was strange in that the weather was clear with no storms in the forecast. Even more strange was that my wife didn’t notice anything. She is always focused on the weather radar during approaching storms, but not that evening. Our dog usually freaks out if a storm is anywhere within 50 miles of us, but she too remained calm and didn’t notice either.
The lightning and thunder became more intense and appeared to have moved right in on top of me. Then I began to hear strange voices that I couldn’t understand. They seemed to be more of a rapid chattering or chirping sound – something like voices on a tape playing at a higher speed. It was unintelligible gibberish that was very frightening.
The lightning, thunder and weird voice sounds were all closing in on me with overwhelming intensity. They were now in the bedroom with me, and I knew I must leave the room at once. As I left and started walking down the hallway, it seemed the strange forces that I was seeing and hearing were closely following me and trying to overtake my mind and body. I tried to move quickly through the hallway in a hunched over position while protecting my head with my arms.
Near the end of the hallway, I tripped over something (there were no obstacles there) and fell down onto my hands and knees. At that point the dozens of strange voices shouting at me, along with the increasing thunder and lightning, seemed to be attacking my very soul. In an act of futility, I began to scream – helpless to stop.
I awoke to my wife shaking me. She said, “Wake up – you’re having a bad dream!” I don’t remember exactly how I responded to her, but quickly went back to sleep. However, my dream immediately began again precisely where it had been interrupted.
I struggled back onto my feet and stumbled through the kitchen toward the family room. However, the enormous weight of the overwhelming, oppressive forces surrounding me caused me to fall again – this time down into the floor of our step-down family room. Somehow in spite of those non-stop voices harassing me, and the horrible supernatural nature of the other unexplained forces, I managed to start crawling across the room.
In the far corner of the family room is a large over-stuffed chair. It was accessible to me as a place of possible refuge and safety – a place where I might hide to escape the increasingly terrible onslaught against me. I crawled toward the chair using every fiber of strength I could muster against my relentless attackers.
By the time I got there, I was totally exhausted from the experience. It seemed as though all the demons from the pit of hell were trying very hard to overpower and destroy me. After crawling behind the chair, I simply collapsed down into a fetal position – and screamed for my life.
My wife woke me up again. This time after making sure I was completely awake, I turned over and soon went back to sleep. My horrifying dream ordeal was finally over.
So…what was that all about? I’ll never know for sure, but I do have some thoughts on the matter. Sometimes extreme situations in our life, abnormal stress levels, or even unusual eating and sleeping patterns can affect the subconscious mind resulting in “bad” dreams or nightmares. However, it’s not likely that any of those things were the cause of my ordeal. Because of the obvious spiritual and supernatural nature of the dream events, something much more sinister had to be involved that night. Is it possible that I was subjected to a vicious demonic attack? Yes…I do believe it is a possibility. The Scriptures have much to say about evil spirits, where they came from, and what they are attempting to do today.
God created all things, both in the heavens and on earth to serve Him (Col. 1:16) – including the angels. We know the angels existed before our earth was created because Job 38:7 tells us they all sang together during creation. Scriptures record that they exist in countless numbers. Rev. 5:11 describes their numbers as ten thousands times ten thousand, and thousands of thousands.
We learn from Eze. 28:14 that before Lucifer was ejected from his position in heaven, he was the anointed cherub who occupied a special place of prominence in guarding the throne of God. However, Lucifer who became Satan was filled with pride and thought of himself as God. He was cast out of God’s abode in the third heaven, taking one third of the angels with him. Some of the fallen angels were consigned to hell, but others (demons) are still free and doing Satan’s will.
Satan, also known as the devil, was given authority over the first and second heavens as the prince of the power of the air (Eph. 2:2) and god of this age (2 Cor. 4:4). He masquerades as an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:14). He is called the prince of demons as well as the father of lies and deceit. We are warned in 1 Pet. 5:8 that our adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whomever he may devour.
The Apostle Paul writes in Eph. 6:12 (NKJV), “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
The devil and his demons are working very hard today attempting to destroy all the things of God, people, and relationships while relentlessly spreading evil in this world. Above all, they hate the saving message of the Gospel and all it stands for – including those who live it and proclaim it for God’s honor and glory. But…all who have read the last book of God’s Word know that Satan’s time is short and that he will be defeated. The day is coming when he will be thrown alive into the lake of fire along with all those who did not choose Jesus as their Lord and Master while they had the chance in this life.
If you don’t know Jesus as your Savior, then it’s likely the demonic forces would leave you alone because they know they have you on their side. They have already won the battle for your eternal soul. However, if you are a born again believer, they will be forceful and persistent in many ways to weaken your faith, instill fears in your heart, create doubt in your mind, and place temptations in your life. It is essential that all believers protect themselves by putting on the whole armor of God as clearly explained in Eph. 6:10-18 to fight against the wiles of the devil.
If any skeptics are reading this, then let me assure them on the authority of the Word of God that Satan along with his demons who are present in countless numbers, are both very real. They will do everything in their power to destroy you – by subtly deceiving you into believing that you don’t need God as the top priority, or any priority, in your life. If that has already happened to you, then get on your knees now before the Almighty God. In humble submission ask for His forgiveness, and surrender your life to Jesus as your Savior, Lord and Master so that you can live it all for His honor and glory.
Now concerning the earlier reference about “too much hot chili” or “watching horror movies”, well…I don’t like chili and I don’t watch horror movies.
If you died today, are you absolutely certain that you would go to heaven? You can be! TRUST JESUS NOW

From beginning to end (that last sentence is perfect!), this is very well done, and a gripping read. I've often wished I could recover and continue a dream when I've been waked in the middle of one, but I wouldn't want to live through your dream!
Sometimes, I think, if the enemy cannot get at us during our waking hours, he attacks us in our sleep. I'm reminded how our dad prayed with us at bedtime from Luther's evening prayer, asking God for His holy angels to surround us so the wicked one could have no power over us.
Your story is a good reminder to keep on praying.
I have felt the buffetings of the adversary often in my lifetime.I know we must always remember that the worth of one soul is great to our Heavenly Father. I too have had a dream similar to this one.It makes you thankful for the power of prayer and of the knowledge and comfort we can obtain in this life--as true disciples of Jesus Christ. Thank you for writing this.
There was a man recently that was on TBN that had a dream like yours, he stated that he sensed that he was not the one going to hell, but millions were, and he believed the message to him was, that the Lord was telling of the responsibility laid on ALLLLLLL Christians to get the harvest in, NOW, this is what will happen to loved ones not saved, those you see everyday not saved, pretty heavy warning, yeah?
