The Lord is My...GPS??
"We're content to linger in the paths sign-posted with Your decisions...."
(Isaiah 26:8a, The Message)
OK, so my car does not have a GPS system, but I have driven and ridden in cars that did. It always fascinates me how that lady inside the car knows all the directions everywhere, and that all you have to do is follow her instructions, and you will (usually) arrive at your chosen destination....
But...do you know that you can still get lost (or, if you are male, "taking a detour") even if you have a GPS system? Sometimes, it is a system error: the roads aren't updated correctly in the system, or there is construction. Other times, it is a driver error: not paying attention to the directions, or not following the directions that the GPS lady is giving. Either way, we end up having either to make a detour or a U-turn to get back on the path to our destination.
This verse in the Bible states that God's path is "sign posted" with His decisions. If we are on the right path, all we have to do is "read the signs" (follow His directions) to know which direction to go in order to stay on the path that He has intended for us to follow. This is a promise that He will not lead us down a path that has no map, or is not updated in the "Heavenly GPS." He absolutely wants us to know His will, and has given us signposts to lead us along the way.
Let's think about signs for a second. With the possible exception of a billboard, if we are going too fast, we cannot fully read the signs along the road. (I suppose that is why every time we are going along a major highway, they give you about 2-3 warnings that every exit is coming up!) So it is with God's signs, if we are moving impatiently ahead, going too fast, we might miss the signs that God has posted for us, and therefore, might get off at the wrong exit, and onto the wrong path.
This is where the other part of the verse comes in: "content to linger...." OUCH! Lingering means waiting...going slow.... Not my strong point! I am not content to linger...I am impatient, trying to find the "shortcut" that the GPS missed!
I want to be on God's path for my life. I want to be like Abraham or Moses, listening to God's voice telling them which way to go, not knowing the actual way that they were going, but knowing that they were going to end up in the exact will of God, the Promised Land. To do that, I need to learn to listen for God's voice, to "read the signs", to allow Him to direct me step-by-step, turn-by-turn, just as I would allow the GPS lady to direct me from my house to the next soccer game! :o)
Lord, thank You that You do not keep Your paths secret. Your paths are sign posted as a tourist trail through the woods with what You want me to do at all times. Help me to learn to follow Your path, to hear Your voice, and to read Your signs. Help me to be content to linger, to wait upon Your will, and not to move ahead of where You want me to be. Thank You, Lord, for Your loving kindness, and for giving me the opportunity to serve You in whatever path You have set for me. Amen.
