Sad But True

OK, I’d admitted it; I have a MySpace page.

And on MySpace, one of the things you can do, is you can post bulletins. Most people post silly surveys about your past or what you’re doing now. Others may want to know what your favorite thing or activity you enjoy doing.

The other night, I was reading the bulletins that were posted, when I came across one that my niece posted. It caught my eye.

It asked questions about why some kids are suicidal. It asked about girls who have eating disorders. It asked why there is so much violence in our schools nowadays. It asked why people couldn’t be more accepting of people different sexual orientations.

This is by no means the answer to those questions. It’s merely a response that really should be considered. It’s not about religion, but it’s about someone who cares what happens to His world and the creation thereof.

Why do people do things that may hurt themselves? Why do we care about our impressions that we leave with others? Why does it seem that life is nothing more than a day in high school? Why does religion get blamed for all the crap that happens in this world?

I don’t know.

Forty-eight years on the rock and that’s the best answer I can come up with, I don’t know. If I could be blessed with a life that would grant me another five hundred years or a thousand of living that will still be the best answer I could come up with, I don’t know.

I could say that it wasn’t like that when I was in high school; that this generation is the only one that has to deal with a hard life, but that would be a lie. I knew kids that did destructive behavior. I knew kids that opted for “alternative” lifestyles. I had one girl from my sophomore year that took her own life in a municipal park restroom. Still to this day, I think, “How sad her life must have been?”

No matter what age we find ourselves at, we are going to do things that will bring attention to ourselves regardless if we want the attention or not. Whether it’ll be boys wearing the pants so low that they show off their underwear or girls who wear pants so low that they show off a pair of thong undergarments or old men showing up on a front porch of a fourteen year old, thinking they can seduce them (thank you Brian Roberts and NBC for “To Catch A Predator”)

And you want to know what else is sad but true?

“Like a dog that returns to its vomit, is a fool that repeats its folly”
Proverbs 26:11

We do things that are insane. We do things out of spite. We do things just to irritate people! When in reality, most people don’t give a tinker’s dam and the things we do to impress these people who don’t really care, end up hurting us over and over again.

We have freedom and we use that freedom to hurt ourselves as well as others.

We have life, but we choose death.

We have sexual intimacy and we use it as a commodity.

We're meant to be loved, and we reject that love that can save us.

I don’t know. If I did, I’ll be God.

But we can’t even turn to Him.

Or can we?

We keep returning to our folly and for what? Security? Friendship? Identity? Intimacy?

And God says (I’m not talking about religion) – “Knock it off! You’re created for better things other than eating vomit. You’re created out of joy, not to be laughed at for the foolish things you do. Come home wayward child; come back to the love that can save you.”

With tears in His eyes, like a true loving Father looking for the lost child, He calls to us. Do we listen?

God is the only choice we can make that makes any kind of sense. We’ve tried other choices and we seen where that leads us, back to barf. So why not take God at His word and come back to the love that will save us?
