Psalms 18:1-2-3:
"I love you O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my Rock, my Fortress and my Delieverer....
My God is my Rock in Whom I take refuge.
He is my Shield and the Strength of my Salvation...my Stronghold".

Verse 3:
"I called to the Lord Who is worthy of Praise and I am saved from my enemies." (NIV)

Psalms 34:4: "I sought the Lord and He heard me and delivered me from all my fears".

Lately, I've had trouble sleeping and when I'm unable to sleep, I may begin thinking about some of our health issues.

Several close friends in Hawaii (as well as here on the Mainland) have gone to Heaven recently, so I've thought about them a lot.

Sleep-aids help, but the best help is from the Word of God.

I started reading the Psalms and these verses ministered to me:
Ps. 3:5:
"I lay down and slept....I awakened and the Lord sustains me."

Ps. 4:4-5:
"Meditate in your heart upon your bed and be still and trust in Him".

Ps. 5:12:
"God surrounds us with favor as a shield."

Ps. 6: 8-9:
"The Lord hears the voice of weeping and He hears our pleas and receives our prayers".

I also receive help from 'Streams in the Desert' (a devotional book we've used since 1960). June 2nd: "What time I am afraid, I will trust in You." (Psalms 56:3-4)

Corrie ten Boon's book has also helped me. "God has plans...not problems...for our lives".

Before Corrie's sister, Betsie, died in the concentration camp in Ravinsbruk, Germany, she said:
"Corrie, your whole life has been a training for the work that you are doing here in prison and for the work you will do afterwards". Corrie lived until 1983 and blessed thousands!

While serving what became my last full-time pastorate many years ago, cancer hit...
and I needed the Lord as never before!
Be careful or fear can replace faith....but we can be delivered from fear!

While serving there, I wrote a weekly column for the newspaper entitled:
'To Whom It May Concern'.

I shared one of those, "Walking Toward Your Fears" back on Nov. 11, 2004...
but would like to re-emphasize some things.

My major headings were:
1) WE WALK TOWARD OUR FEARS BY FAITH AND NOT BY SIGHT (II Cor. 5:7)

Reason has its faith...and faith has its reasons, but when we can not understand...
we must STAND BY FAITH on the Solid Rock of God's Character, Word and Ways.

2) WE WALK TOWARD OUR FEARS WHEN WE WALK IN THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT....AND NOT IN THE WEAKNESS OF THE FLESH.

3) WE WALK TOWARD OUR FEARS WHEN WE WALK WITH THE GREAT SHEPHERD...
AND NOT SATAN.

Psalms 46 is great on 'Fear nots for fear knots' emphasizing that:
God is our Refuge - Solid Rock under us.
God is our River - Flowing Stream of Holy Spirit within and through us.
God is our Revelation - to know, experience and enjoy and be strengthened.

The key verse in Ps. 46:8 is: "Be still and know that I am God".

Actually, the real cause of fear is unbelief. You remember when Jesus stilled the troubled sea, He asked, "Why are you so fearful and how is it that you have no faith?"

Isaiah 12:2 also gives us the answer:
"Behold God is my Salvation.
I will trust and not be afraid, for the Lord Jehovah is my Strength and my Song".

Please remember:
There is NO problem too great for God to solve..
No burden too heavy for God to carry....
No battle too over-whelming for God to fight..and win!

When we allow our fears to rule our lives, we make them more powerful than God.
God is greater than our fears. The Bible says, "Is anything too hard for God?"
And....if God be for us, who can be against us?

God is not just 'temporary', but He is our Eternal Refuge....no matter what...
even to the end of the world.

CONCLUSION:
So, rejoice and believe that God is able to deliver you.
A hymn that I've sung since childhood is entitled:
"He is Able to Deliver you"
Words and Music by William A. Ogden (1887)

'Tis the grandest theme through the ages rung;
'Tis the grandest theme for a mortal tongue;
'Tis the grandest theme that the world e'er sung,
"Our God is able to deliver thee."

Chorus:
He is able to deliver thee,
He is able to deliver thee;
Though by sin oppressed, go to Him for rest;
"Our God is able to deliver thee."

'Tis the grandest theme in the earth or main;
'Tis the grandest theme for a mortal strain;
'Tis the grandest theme, tell the world again,
"Our God is able to deliver thee."

'Tis the grandest theme, let the tidings roll,
To the guilty heart, to the sinful soul;
Look to God in faith, He will make thee whole,
"Our God is able to deliver thee."

Chorus:
He is able to deliver thee,
He is able to deliver thee;
Though by sin oppressed, go to Him for rest;
"Our God is able to deliver thee."

Here are the words of Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego to King Nebuchadnezzar.
"If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God we serve is able to deliver us from it.
But even if He does not, we want you to know O King, that we will NOT serve your gods or worship the image of gold you have set up." (Daniel 3:17-18 in the NIV)

God IS able to deliver us....
Remember, we are significant not so much by 'what we do', but by 'whose we are'.

We must honor Him with our lives and make Him known by life (and by lip) to others!

Ps. 4:4-5: "Meditate in your heart upon your bed and be still and trust in Him".

Oh, what consolation we receive when we heed the great message in the quoted verse above!

Thank you, Travis, for sharing with us your Godly heart and experience. The three Hebrew youths who were thrown into the fire teach us a lesson. God did not put the fire out; He allowed it to remain awhile. He did, however, walk through the fire with them, comforting and protecting them. When they came out on the other side, what a testimony they had to share!

God bless, and I pray for your health and that of your wonderful wife.
Thomas

What a beautiful and encouraging article dear Travis and La Moyne! Yes God is indeed able to deliver us and we will hold on to that for all we are worth. You, for yourselves in this time of troubling health problems and me for my husband in his time of trouble. In His love your friend, Sharon
