David Brings the Ark Home
(2 Samuel 6)
His heart pulsed with elation as he fixed his sight upon
the city set before him, glorious Jerusalem
In his ears rang trumpet blasts and boisterous shouts of praise
Dust rose under trampling feet as the sun beat down in waves.
Following close behind him came the sacred Ark of God
seeking now its place of rest on the mountain's holy sod.
And he, yearning to worship, felt the tug of royal robes
Without a thought removed them; shed as well his kingly role.
Instead, preferred the garment worn by priests in service to
his God and King, Jehovah. Surely nothing less would do.
Then joy welled up within him and he danced with all his might
He leapt and whirled and worshiped humbly carefree in God's sight.
But watching from a window set apart in regal dress
stood the beautiful Michal in whose heart welled bitterness
Somehow passion she once held was replaced by spirit sore.
Seeing joy she did not own she despised him even more.
As he came to bless his wife he was met with her disdain
"How splendid your performance... all the maids beheld your shame!"
With lowered voice he answered "It was for the Lord alone.
I'll humble myself further for He set me on this throne."
"Those maids of whom you've spoken from them I'll receive honor."
Quietly he turned and left his words for her to ponder.
And leaving with her husband a fulfilled, contented life
For rather than be humbled she remained a barren wife.
