What do we really know about the Holy Spirit? Many think of the Holy Spirit as a mysterious part of the trinity or someone who isnít too important in our relationship with God. But weíre about to rediscover what a huge part the Holy Spirit has in our walk with God.
Weíve all heard about God and Jesus. Jesus dieing on the cross for our sins, and God being our heavenly Father. What about the Holy Spirit? Who is he and what is his purpose?
He is not only the very Spirit of God, but he is our helper. The Holy Spirit is who God is. Just as we all have a spirit in us, God also has a Spirit. Our spirits are who we are. Itís the person thatís deep inside of us that is transparent to God. Itís our personality, the way we think and so on. Well the Holy Spirit is Godís Spirit. Itís who he is.
When Jesus was on earth, he referred to the Holy Spirit as a Helper. John 14:26 ďBut the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.Ē Once Jesus ascended to heaven, he promised to send a helper-the Spirit of God. Jesus made sure that we were not left alone on this earth. Every person that chooses to accept Christ as their savior and lives for God has the Holy Spirit in their lives. You cannot have the Holy Spirit apart from Christ. You must acknowledge Christ and repent of your sins before the Spirit comes into your life. A good way to look at it is the Holy Spirit is like Godís seal on us stating that we belong to Him. Romans 8:16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are Godís children.
The Spirit doesnít just abide in us and do nothing. He is at work inside of us, guiding us to make right decisions. Maybe you have experienced the following scenario: Remember when you decided to serve Jesus? You began to read your Bible and discovered areas in your life that needed changing. Later, when you were tempted to do wrong, something different happened. Now that the Holy Spirit lives inside, two things will take place. First, you will get a check in your own spirit. Something will stop you in your tracks. This is what we call conviction. Second, the Holy Spirit will remind you of the scripture you read previously and bring it to your remembrance. At this point you have the option to obey or disobey the Spiritís leading in your life. The Holy Spirit is our helper to remind us of Godís word and keep us from sinning. This is why itís so important to read the Bible. The Spirit and the word work together. How will we know what is right or wrong if weíre not reading from the Bible? We donít! Without the Bible and the Holy Spirit in our lives, we end up making our own convictions up, and we live lives with no absolute. We become a god unto ourselves deciding what is right and wrong. But only the absolute truth in the Bible can give us clear direction as to what God requires of his creation. Although, a lot of people donít want to read the Bible because they know they will have to change.
When we have the Spirit in our lives and we yield to him, he will guide us. One thing about the Holy Spirit though, he will never push his will upon us. He will gently guide us, but we always have the will to go either way.
The Spirit also helps us pray. There are times that we donít know what to pray about, whether itís a particular person, country or situation. The Spirit will bring things to our mind to pray about that we naturally wouldnít have known to pray about. I remember a few years ago praying about a subject pertaining to my own life. I wasnít actually being faced with the subject at that time, so it didnít make sense to me why I was praying about it. Although, the unction was so strong, it couldnít be ignored. I obeyed the Spirit. Well, about a year later, I was faced with the very situation that I had prayed about the previous year. I truly believe it was my prayers the previous year that gave me the strength to get through that situation. I wouldnít have known to pray for that unless the Spirit put it on my heart. Romans 8:26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.
You see, the Spirit is a great help in a Christianís life. The more we yield to him, the more we will become like him. Our life will begin to produce his nature which is found in Galations 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is Love, Joy, Peace, Patience, Goodness, Kindness, Goodness and Faithfulness. We cannot obtain a successful walk in Christ, apart from Godís Spirit working in our lives. If you want to be an overcommer and have a victorious Christian life, be still and listen to the Spirit voice in you life.
