Im taking the charts hostage they are mine for awhile
And may i say i do this with a big ole smile
Because for so long ive knocked on this door for it to be Slammed in my face
Holding native Nashville against me as if it were a race
Year after year I try to get in
So these charts are mine till I say when
I'll write you a hit night after night
Letting these singers keep my spotlight
Im the unknown star that shines
sent here to write lifes lonely lines
Ive been through the pits of hell
And what a story I have to tell
In this big ole world where the rich gets richer
Taking from the poor like a cop to a snitcher
Ive seen all kinds of life and lived to tell
Stories from crackhouses and old jail cells
I'm the story that they sing
Yet for me does opportunity ring
They take and take with excuses from the hill
the one that really gets me is i was born in Nashville
Born in the heart of country music right here under your nose
Yet to me your doors stay closed
So these charts are mine for awhile it's long overdue
And may I say to Nashville it was No thanks to you
