Clearly, these are days of soul searching for Christians in America. To be sure, there are a number of events that have triggered this new stir of our soul. A dangerously apocalyptical situation in the Middle East is prompting crucial, extremely critical questions. This, as a decay acceleration of the culture urgently entices us to action.
And, while we try dealing with the central question of how more effectively confess Jesus Christ to this literally dying civilization, we also face the prevailing frustration and dismay of a large segment of our nation. In this context, I consider it imperative to assert that any comprehensive worldview of an American Christian today is to comprise both, a prophetic ministry and a social strategy to ensure the total victory of Jesus Christ in both, the eternal and the temporal realm.
Now, it is obvious that the root of our moral chaos is spiritual with the prevalence of sin in so much of our individual and collective life. It is also clear that its solution lies on the saving grace of the gospel of Our Lord. As an example, I have often told myself that the undue emphasis on “rights” of the pro choice movement stems from the loud deficit of “spiritual awareness” of most of its members. Surely, a passing acquaintance with the Spirit of Love would have led them to understand Albert Schweitzer’s words: “For the truly ethical man, all life is sacred”. So, this serves our purpose to explain that Christians simultaneously have today two distinctive, magnificent aims, evangelize the person and transform the culture. In this case, the latter would involve to proclaim loudly, “from the rooftops”, the infinitive value of life and also to fight through every legitimate political, social and legal means for the lives of the unborn children. For as the point can be made that to prevail in society is not a salvific purpose we are to reaffirm that struggling for the prevalence of Christian values, for “the betterment of the city” is biblically mandated indeed.
In this almost agonic hour, we all need to get involved. It is decisive that we wake up to the formidable, crucial challenges that we are facing No Christian can’t possibly stay home now. For this is the time to agilize our evangelism campaigns, to actively multiply short term missions to every place in this world, to make effective use of all the Internet and the new media possibilities. Here, it may do well to mention what a few committed Hispanic entrepreneurs have accomplished with Almavision, a 24 hr. Spanish Christian television network that scarcely starting in California is seen today all throughout Latin America. This is the spirit we are to take hold: “redeeming the times, for the days are evil”(Ephesians 5:16)
And, as far “as the City”, the 2008 elections are before us. We need to get together and study and discuss candidates. This is the opportunity to provide the final blow to Roe v. Wade, to develop a wise and effective foreign policy that would preserve the country from terrorism, to make every effort to end our dependency on foreign oil etc, etc.
Christians, arise and shine!
