That puts this article into the collection of shortest-ever titles. 'New,' it seems, is an unusual, unique word. The dictionaries struggle to define it. Bringing forth its meaning appears to best be achieved by the 'descriptive' method...
New: there was nothing, like a vacuum, the absence of anything, not like anything before---THEN there was something! Out of the nothingness springs SOMETHING---that did not exist or was never used before. It wasn't there, then there it was!
The KJV has 131 occurrences of the word "new." The GNB, 171 times. Certainly not a little-used expression. But indeed high- powered and forceful in its impact.
"The people were so amazed that they asked
each other, 'What is this? A NEW teaching---
and with authority! He even gives orders to
evil spirits and they obey Him.'
News about Him spread quickly over the
whole region of Galilee." Mark 1:27,28. NIV.
Also note the NEW teaching of the Apostle Paul
in Acts 17:16-34. NIV. This event happened because Paul was preaching the good news about
Jesus and the Resurrection.
"For I (Paul) received from the Lord what I also
passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night
He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks,
He broke it and said, 'This is my body, which
is for you; do this in remembrance of Me.' In the
same way, after supper He took the cup, saying,
This cup is the NEW covenant in My blood;
do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of Me.' For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until He comes (back)."
1 Cor 11:23-26. NIV. Coinciding are Luke 22:20,
Mark 14:24, Matt 26:28,29. NIV.
This was/is the NEW way to approach God,
through the sacrifice of His Son.
Jesus speaking, "A NEW command I give you.
Love one another. As I have loved you, so must
you love one another. By this all men will know
that you are My disciples, if you love one another."
John 13:34,35. NIV.
That love should outweigh and outdistance
greed, selfishness, envy, hate.
"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a
NEW creation; the old has gone,
the NEW has come!" 2 Cor 5:17. NIV.
Similarly in Gal 6:15, Eph 4:24, Col 3:10. NIV.
Jesus said it this way, "I tell you the truth,
no one can see the kingdom of God
unless he is BORN AGAIN." John 3:3. NIV.
The MIRACLE of the NEW (spiritual) birth!
Can't be earned, bought, or finagled...
Only accepted as a GIFT from Almighty God Himself!
And reckless, impetuous, impulsive Peter heralded
the great truth about the future, "But in keeping with His promise we are looking forward to a
NEW heaven and a NEW earth, the home
of righteousness." 2 Pet 3:13. NIV.
Exiled and isolated John unfolded the vision of the future,
"Then I saw a NEW heaven and a NEW earth, for
the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea." Rev 21:1
"I (John) saw the Holy City, the NEW Jerusalem,
coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying,
'Now the dwelling of God is with men, and
He will live with them and be their God.
[this is how it started out, remember]
He will wipe every tear from their eyes.
There will be no more death or mourning
or crying or pain, for the old order of
things has passed away.'" Rev 21:2-4. NIV.
"He Who was seated on the throne said,
'I am making everything NEW.'" Rev 1:5. NIV
It is sad that the inward sinfulness, self-centeredness, even corruptness of the human heart has clouded over and pulled shut the curtain on these crucial Scriptural truths. It's going to happen.
And, finally, tucked away in the Old Testament,
is a message for all who seek the NEW:
"Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed,
for His compassions never fail.
They are NEW every morning;
great is Your faithfulness." Lamentations 3:22,23. NIV.
The refreshing, invigorating, challenging
Word of God---Let's read it faithfully!
