The day for the fight finally arrived. I felt I had trained hard enough for it. After all, I ran several miles everyday and I ate the right meals. I didn’t take any steroids so I wasn’t cheating on my opponent. I woke up that day, got dressed and headed towards the venue for the fight. My boxing gloves were in perfect place and I felt a renewed energy as I thought about how I was going to give my opponent a technical knock out.
But somehow, I didn’t have a crew, a manager or even an audience to watch me fight. No one was around to give me a dime if I won the fight but I still had to fight because the fight was all about saving my name and my choices, not about money.
Therefore the whole arena was empty or so I thought until I saw one person sitting in a chair, ready to watch the fight. It was my closest friend and confidant; the Holy Spirit. He was always with me wherever I found myself. He was the only one sitting on a chair ready to watch the fight. I walked up to Him and asked, “What are you doing here? I thought I was meant to be alone in this.” He smiled and said “You’ll need me in this fight; you can’t do it alone just as you can’t do anything without me.”
Just then, the lights went out and when they came on again, I saw my opponent standing right in front of me. He was tall and huge and I almost lost heart when I compared my frail looking body to His massive build and frame. He also came alone with no crew or audience, and for reasons best known to him and God, his face was clearly masked.
The bell rang for the first round. I charged towards my opponent and gave him my best hits but he didn’t move. He retaliated my move and gave me several hits round my body. I fell flat to the floor and felt really miserable. I couldn’t move and needed enormous help.
I was still on the floor thinking of what next to do when I felt a hand on my shoulder. I managed to look up and saw it was the Holy Spirit. “I can’t do this alone, I need help. I must win this fight!”
“Don’t fret”. The Holy Spirit said. “Just listen to me and obey every instruction that I give to you.”
As He spoke, He lifted me from the floor and placed me on the chair in the boxing ring. An angel appeared after that to take care of my broken teeth and soothe my wounds. Another angel also appeared with a bottle of water, which he placed in my mouth. When they finished, the Spirit said,” remove the right boxing glove”. I was alarmed.
“My right hand is my action hand, I can’t fight without it!”
“Will you trust me in all this?” I heard the Spirit ask.
I nodded my head and removed my right glove and as I did, the angels disappeared.I dropped my glove on the floor and looked at Him. He moved nearer to me and whispered in my ears.
All this while, my opponent didn’t say a word but he said everything he wanted to say through his laughter. He kept on laughing all the time I was receiving help. His laughter seemed to say, “you’ll never make it, you weakling! Did you really think you were going to win this fight?” When the bell for the second round rang, he stopped laughing.
This time, he charged towards me and wanted to finish me up but just then I said with a loud voice “Stop!” To my surprise, he obeyed me and stopped. I continued “put your hands down, move back and fall to the floor, lie straight on your back. Become weak and be still as dead”. As I said all this, my opponent obeyed me and did all that I required. I thought that was the end of the fight and wanted to start rejoicing that I had won but the Spirit said the fight wasn’t over yet.
“It’s time to wear your right glove.” I did. “You know what to do” I heard the Spirit say. Indeed I knew and I swung into action immediately.“Get up!” I commanded my opponent. When he did, I gave him my best shot and that sent him straight to the floor. I nodded to myself. I had finished my opponent. I looked at the Holy Spirit who helped me all the way through and knelt in front of Him in thanks.
“Would you like to unmask your opponent?” I heard Him ask. Hearing this, I moved swiftly to my opponent and unmasked him. I almost passed out when I saw him for he was someone I knew only too well, someone I saw everyday, someone that was always with me. My opponent was no one but ME!
I looked at the Holy Sprit in surprise and my eyes seemed to say, “Could you please explain all this? How could I have been fighting myself all this while and didn’t know?” I heard the Lord tell me; “Your greatest enemy is you! It’s you that has the final say concerning anything in your life. You’re the one that decides to sleep when you should pray and study. You’re the one that decides to work or go to a party when you should be in church. You’re the one that has the greatest control over your body and choices so as you say what you want to your body; you’ll get it for sure.” “Do you mean the only way to see myself the way God sees me and be the man God made me is to fight myself?” I asked.
“If you don’t fight yourself and allow the Word of God to thrive in your life, you’ll never achieve what you want and realize your dreams. You won’t be successful and there won’t be any trace of fulfillment in your life. Therefore you must fight yourself; your body and mind so that your spirit will have full control of all your activities. Let the word in the bible get control over you and let your system be immersed in it. When it does, you’ll be able to fight yourself, win yourself and put yourself under.”
I thanked the Lord for all He said and then turned to myself laying on the floor. “Get up you! We’re leaving this boxing ring to face other things and don’t you dare try to challenge me anymore because I have authority over you”. I saw my body gradually, weakly get up and we left, going to attend to other matters. I learnt one of the biggest lessons in life through this experience.
Everyone’s greatest opponent is himself. To be on top of every situation is to fight and defeat you. To follow and achieve a dream is to win you over first. Without doing this, it will be a life of struggle and frustration. However,God in His grace and mercy has given us the Holy Spirit to help us win ourselves. He’s a friend that’s always there. Learn to lean on Him and trust in Him. Learn to fight yourself because your greatest enemy is YOU!

The man, who doesn’t believe in Himself enough to train himself, is the man who will never conquer.
