Looking for a wife? Some things are better than beauty.

Marriage is God’s idea. So he knows all there is to know about it. The world today is so far from God’s ideal for marriage that it is a miracle that the rate of divorce in the society today is not higher than what it already is. Like the foundation of a building the choice of a marriage partner is one of the most important parts of marriage and could go a long way in determining the success or failure of a marriage. Fortune telling will not guide you in choosing right. Astrology is of no use. God alone knows best and the Bible can be a useful guide in this regard. A lot of men place beauty as the most important factor they consider in the choice of a wife. We have a thing or two to learn from the scriptures, which can guide us in choosing right.

Genesis 24
15 And it came to pass, before he had done speaking, that, behold, Rebekah came out, who was born to Bethuel, son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, with her pitcher upon her shoulder.
16 And the damsel was very fair to look upon, a virgin, neither had any man known her: and she went down to the well, and filled her pitcher, and came up.
17 And the servant ran to meet her, and said, let me; I pray thee, drink a little water of thy pitcher.
18 And she said, Drink, my lord: and she hasted, and let down her pitcher upon her hand, and gave him drink.
19 And when she had done giving him drink, she said, I will draw water for thy camels also, until they have done drinking.
20 And she hasted, and emptied her pitcher into the trough, and ran again unto the well to draw water, and drew for all his camels.
21 And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not.
22 And it came to pass, as the camels had done drinking, that the man took a golden earring of half a shekel weight, and two bracelets for her hands of ten shekels weight of gold; {earring: or, jewel for the forehead}
23 And said, whose daughter art thou? tell me, I pray thee: is there room in thy father's house for us to lodge in?
(KJV)

This is the story of Rebecca and goes a long way to show that some things are stronger than and better than beauty. If you are looking for a wife better be sure that she is a “daughter of Rebecca” and not a “daughter of Jezebel”. There are few Rebeccas but a higher number of Jezebels out there. Here is a list of stuff that you are likely to find in a daughter of Rebecca and it does not have to include beauty.

*Humility: humble enough to accept to undertake menial tasks.
*Courteous and hospitable: She offered water to a total stranger
*Diligence: can you imagine drawing water from a well to feed 10 camels single-handedly?
*Character: she was not in anyway enticed by the obvious riches the servant seemed to possess.
*Respectful: She called the “servant” my lord.
*Ready to go the extra mile: The servant only asked a drink for himself but she did more than she was asked to do by offering to give water to the camels.
*Gentleness: she was not brash or aggressive. I imagine when she was asked if there was room in her father’s house a daughter of jezebel would have responded otherwise.
*Tender and caring: again the servant only asked if there was room for him but she was more than willing to provide lodging and meal for his camels.

Little did Rebecca know she was taking a test. Yet she passed with flying colors. I think more guys need to put their proposed wife to a test before making a final choice. It is not all about beauty you know.
