How to Plant Sonflowers
How to Plant Sonflowers
by Tonja Taylor
I bet you like flowers. I do. I think they are one of the most beautiful things on earth. They pop up out of the barren winter ground, and sprinkle lovely bits of color everywhere. Many of them smell so sweet. Only God can make a flower, and I know that He in His loving wisdom gave them to us humans to delight us. He is so wonderful!
But how are flowers made? From a seed. And not just flowers! Everything you see came from a seed, including you! Even man-made things like buildings and machines and cars came from a seed—the seed of an idea. Flowers happen the same way. God gives the seed, and the seed is planted in the ground, then given water and sunshine and food. Only then can it grow and produce that beautiful bloom!
The seed would still be a seed if it stayed above ground, but it would never become what God meant it to be, would it? It must be planted, or “sowed.” Then once it is sowed, it will start to produce what is inside.
It is the same with our lives. What are they producing? Are our lives like beautiful flower gardens, full of lovely, sweet-smelling flowers of love and peace and joy and energy and direction and faith in our loving Daddy God?
I call these and other good seeds that we plant to produce Godly traits “Sonflowers.” I call them Sonflowers because Jesus is the Son of God, and God planted Jesus the Son in the ground after He died on the cross for us, to produce a huge family of children—Sonflowers!--just like Jesus!
“For whom He did foreknow, He also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren.” (Romans 8:29)
Then, three days later, Jesus, the Rose of Sharon, the most beautiful Sonflower of all, arose from the ground to live forever! Hallelujah!
And He wants to help you plant Sonflowers in all the people you know. If you have accepted Jesus the Son into your heart as your Savior, then you have His Holy Spirit living in you, and it’s really Him planting Sonflowers through you into other people. Totally cool!
It’s easy and fun to plant Sonflowers. The very best way, of course, is to plant the Word of God, which are the most excellent Sonflower seeds. We do this by reading and learning God’s Word, and living it. A very powerful way to plant Sonflowers—even in the garden of ourselves!—is to speak it! And when we live God’s Word—when we live like His Holy Bible says to live—then we plant Sunflower seeds into other people, because they see us be like Jesus, and they learn more about how loving and wise He is, and thus how to live right. And they want to be like Him, which is the reason for planting!
Helping people, finding nice things to say about them, smiling at them, and especially praying for them, inviting them to church, and sharing Bible verses with them, are some of the most excellent ways to plant Sonflowers. And Jesus says in Isaiah:
“So shall My Word be that goeth forth out of My mouth: it shall not return unto Me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:11)
When we plant Sonflowers, we will get—or “reap”--Sonflowers. We may not get to see all of those lovely blossoms, but our Father Who is faithful and Who tends all of His Sonflower gardens will count them all—and reward us for them! So Father in Heaven, help us be busy planting Your special Sonflowers today!
