“Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.” Three character traits that are the basis for an ideal American are hardworking, honesty, and kindness. Together, these three qualities stand tall.
Hardworking comes in many different forms. Sometimes he plows a field; sometimes he defends the nation out on the front. Or maybe one would find him working the counter in the local diner. No matter what he does, he gives it his all. He knows that everyone cannot have it all. There is always someone who has to work. That is what keeps this country going. He often wonders what it would be like if everyone tried to be a political leader or someone rich and famous. But Hardworking always decides he would rather be here, keeping everyday life turning.
Honesty stands tall and stooped for he knows that though one is honest it does not make him rich. Well acquainted with Hardwork, Honesty watches our declining country with a mournful eye. He reminisces back when an honest person could be found on every street corner. But now, he sells his goods and wares to men who cheat and lie. Though people do not appreciate it, Honesty never lies. It has not made him rich nor famous; but it has given him respect from those he loves.
Kindness waits to stoop and give a hand to those who wearily pass by. Her light is seen from lighthouse towers or candle light somewhere close by. She toils throughout the day. Hard work is not a stranger to her as she tries to make an Honest life. Some do not accept Kindness from neighbors or friends. It seems her lights go out or are not seen anymore. How easy it would be to turn from her way as many have done before. Yet she keeps on trying, never to give up. For if she did, what a pity it would be not to see a smile on the faces of the ones she shines her light upon.
Hardworking, honesty, and kindness are three character traits of an ideal American. When you think of Hardworking, think of General Washington standing on the battle field as the War for Independence is won. When you think of honesty, think of Jonathon Edwards, who was not afraid to tell people the truth where their sin and immorality were concerned. When you think of kindness, think of Amy Carmichael, who reached out to orphans through her kindness and love and brought them the Word of God. Not only do these qualities stand tall, but you will too if you have them. Hardworking, honesty, and kindness are the basis for an ideal American.
