Gutter Saint

When Mother Teresa begged merchants
For food to feed starving children
Did she ever experience acid reflux?

When she walked on the teeming streets
Of Calcutta in sandals
Did she wish for tennis shoes?

When Mother Teresa prayed on her knees
Was it always on a hard floor
Or did she sometimes use a plush cushion?

When she cleaned the maggots
Off of a woman dying in a gutter
Did she gag in a fit of nausea?

When Mother Teresa lived among the poor
Giving comfort to the destitute and dying
Did she ever long to soak in a hot bath?

Mother Teresa said, “Love until it hurts”
And saved all of her comforts for heaven
Tough to grasp, me being a middle-class American.

Tough to grasp indeed. Before we nonchalantly say "We need more Mother Teresa's", we need to ask if we're willing to be one ourselves.
