I lived in Nome, Alaska for 11 1/2 years. I worked as a nurse in the only small hospital in 1000 miles. I was surprised in how the natives do their own outreach, started by the elders. Now, here are elders that lead. The elders come to the hospital, will sit and read the bible, sing, and pray with the ill. You don't have to call them or ask. They give a 100%.
This one moment stands out, because I have never seen it done before. A patient was dying of cancer. He was from one of the islands we served. The family and friends stood around his bed in his darkest hour, and sang him to heaven. They kept singing for hours, everytime I turned around there was new friends, and/or family in the room. They kept their watch, continued singing, and reading the bible.
The moment this man died, that's when they all sang. They kept singing for 10 minutes, prayed, and said their goodbyes. What a blessing these simple people with 6 to 8 grade education gave. I had never seen this christian action ever done and I will not forget their devotion for their loved one either.
Colossians 3: Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God.
