Larry Lilly's Letter Monday April 23, 2007
Every now and then you read something somewhere that makes an impression. Sometimes the impression brings laughter such as the one in a certain Real Estate Brokers office stating: "Changing a toilet paper roll does not cause brain damage." This is a relief!!!
And the world of bumper stickers is notorious for such thought provoking material.
I came across a serious note in a letter from a lady who has been through the mill during the last few years. Her statement brought a thought and a tear as I recalled her pain. Her letter was in response to my mailing list request to write and let me know whether or not they were actually reading Larry Lilly's Journal. I won't quote the entire letter here as I am saving it for the Journal. But take a moment to share in one of this lady's secret for overcoming:
"I am a slow reader and my time to sit and read is so limited, that I force myself to ignore books, magazines and sometimes newsletters in order to read God’s Holy Word. I know the bible had to be a priority for me, as I am so prone to sin. I usually 'skim' through your Journal and then give it to my son in prison. I do pray for you each day."
To know that this sister 'skims' my paper in favor of reading God's word, is humbling to me, but she is on target. I wish many of the people I know who can give the names and birthdays of Hollywood actors and soap opera stars would forego such in order to know where to find John 3:16. Of course I am not humbled for a suffering saint to put God's word above my paper. Broken, but not humbled.
If all who call themselves by the name "Christian" would follow my friends example and put God's word on the "top" priority list, change would be effected in millions of lives, and thereby change for the good of the country would result. I think I remember some sermons from yesteryear that proposed the antiquated idea that God not only wants and wishes for priority, but has been known to demand such. He is the originator of the "My way or the highway" phrase.
One of my pet peeves is the guy or gal who sashays up and with the best religious look ever mustered by a fallen child of Adam assures me that they, in all of their spiritual splendor, read the entire Bible through 18 times per year.
When David wrote "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee." Psalm 119:11, he was conveying the idea that hiding something takes a little thought and time, it means the musing over a verse, a passage and letting it sink down from the mental process into the heart. The sister referred to as putting priority on God's word is the type who takes time to hide God's word as a special treasure in her heart, else she would shoot the husband who abandoned her. I always rejoice when I see the wife of my youth engrossed in the Bible.
