Author requests article critique

West Texas Cow Horse

It mighta been five years ago
When Tejas came out West.
A city colt from Houston �
Yet a character he possessed.

He didn�t really lay a claim
To any size or looks,
But he�s sure proved a cow horse
Can�t be found just by the books.

William started training
And no way could he ignore
That this colt�s endless energy
Would go and go some more.

He also joked it seemed to be
(Now mind, he�s quite a rider)
That ridin� him was nexta kin
To tryin� to ride a spider!

Soon it was time for Tejas
To start day-working with Will.
They covered lots of country
And they both increased in skill.

So now those steers with aches and ills
Are spotted in the herd,
And Will and Tejas ease up close
With purpose that�s concurred.

Then Will shakes out a single loop
And whispers, �Let�s go get �em.�
And Tejas pounces like a cat.
Steers never know what hit �em.

But after steers are doctored
Tejas might just play a prank
�Cause open saddle bags invite
Some fun to be quite frank.

So Tejas gives a mighty shake
And leaves poor William sighin�
As syringes and med supplies
Go all directions flyin�.

As if to say, �I�m sorry,�
He might lower down his head,
But really he just wants a scratch
Behind the ears instead.

He sure is quite a cow horse,
But he�s also got some speed.
He makes a ride to the back side
A real full-fledged stampede.

We�ve never clocked him running,
And he�s never seen a track.
But some high falutin� racehorse
Might not have to cut him slack.

He�s even raced a coyote
Because Will gave him his head.
The coyote ducked and dodged Will�s rope
As on and on they sped.

But the thrill of ropin� coyotes
Had to end because a fence
Allowed the coyote an easy out
To more prolonged suspense.

So Tejas has led quite a life
Although he�s still quite young.
He�s got a lot of qualities;
There�s many still unsung.

But one rides over all the rest;
There can be no debate
That this cow horse just has a heart
As big as his own state.

Elizabeth -- I enjoyed reading about Tejas also. What a transformation for the colt from Houston to Cow Horse. The "heart" of your poem captured Tejas' heart. It sounds like he will be a legend! I laughed at the horse/coyote race. "Saved by a fence." :) Wasn't Tejas a former name/spelling of Texas? When we lived on the farm we had a dog that went from family pet to "Hog Dog" and loved every minute of working with the livestock. Her name was Legacy...we've never had another dog like her. My daughter and her family live in Amarillo. :)
