When we first get called into this
relationship with God, we do not know God as
being merciful. We think becoming a Christian
means our days of making mistakes have to be
over. We think we are making a commitment to be
100% sin free. We know God is giving us a white
robe and we think it was our job to keep it
white forever.
We are called into this relationship to
follow Jesus and to get to know God. Jesus came
into this world to give us eternal life. God's
word tells us that eternal life is to know God.
(John 17:3 NIV) One thing we must come to know
about God is that He overlooks offenses and He
desires the same of us. (Matthew 9:13 NIV) We
must witness through our trials that God's love
covers a multitude of sins. (I Peter 4:8 NIV)
The white robes we are given when we
first believe and are baptized is kept clean,
not by our never making any mistakes, but by our
faith in Jesus' blood to wash our robes again
and again. (Revelations 7:14, 22:14 NIV) Jesus
teaches us we are to forgive seventy-seven
times. (Matthew 18:21,22 NIV) It is by faith in
Jesus' power to save us from sin that we can
pick up our mats and walk, when we fall from
grace and find ourselves caught up in sin. (Mark
2:9 NIV)
In our walk with God, there will be
times when we go to God confessing sin, only
to find right away forgiveness and restoration
for our souls. God's Holy Spirit will not allow
us to feel any condemnation, because we have
been faithful to confess our sin and believe in
the power of Jesus' blood to forgive us. (Romans
8:1 NIV) Then there will be times we will hide
ourselves from God, failing to believe the
present sin is forgivable.
Then we will feel the condemnation,
wallow in our feelings, become depressed and
feel anxious until God's Holy Spirit restores
our faith in Christ. (Romans 3:22,23 NIV) Then
we will go to our Father and confess. He will
instantly relieve our minds and restore the joy
of our salvation.
As we grow in the grace and knowledge of
our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, there will be
times when we will go to God confessing sins,
but the Holy Spirit will stop us. (I Peter 3:18
NIV) We will hear God's voice say, "Put me
first, Praise me and thank me for all the good
things I put in your life." When we do, God will
change our thinking completely. This is how God
shows His glory, by overlooking our offenses,
continuing to supply all our needs and some of
our wants everyday. (Proverbs 19:11 NIV)
Because our old selves (false self
resulting from Adam and Eve's eating the
forbidden fruit), are prone to making many
mistakes, we must put on our new selves
(true self resulting from Jesus living in us)
which are prone to forgiving many mistakes.
Through the trials and test of our lives God
will show us time and time again His readiness,
willingness and ability to overlook our
offenses, which is His Glory. He will show us
His Glory is also our glory. He will help us to
not even see our own offenses, when we overlook
the offenses of others.
When we get to know God we are really
getting to know our true selves, which
were created in His image and His likeness, in
the beginning. (Genesis 1:26,27 NIV)
