~The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world~
Did your eyes meet His, John? A most honored ministry you had, to prepare the way of the Messiah. When He walked past you did His eyes pierce yours with burning love?
Did your eyes meet His? You ~knew Him not~ until you saw the Holy Spirit come down as a dove and rest upon Him. Did He look towards you as He knew you were aware that He was the One Who was prophesized to come? He has the eyes of a dove, harmless and innocent. Oh, such eyes had never been seen before!
. What were in those eyes? Did you see the compassion and tender mercies that He would display throughout His ministry? Did you see acceptance in those eyes as holiness blazed out from them? Did He pierce your heart as He gazed knowingly into your soul yet with the tenderness of a mother, yearning for you?
You told us to ~Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world~. As you gazed upon Him you saw the unresisting innocence of a lamb being taken to the slaughter. You saw Him slaughtered for the sins of every human being that ever lived. You pondered His shortened life that would be cut off by the cruelty of man as He hung upon that horrible cross. You saw Him and His perfect love for the Father and for us as He obediently walked up the hill…to Calvary.
You beheld Him, John, you beheld Him! What were in those eyes as they first met yours? How I wish you could share with us of the time you first gazed on Him. Of how your heart nearly burst with adoration as you saw the fulfillment of thousands of years of prophecy walk before you. As He came up out of the water, His eyes gazing towards our Father. As in the days to come you would watch Him and see the eyes of God, the longing of every human being.
We will see His eyes, someday, also, John. As we gaze in wonder and awe at the ~Lamb slain from the foundation of the world~ we will see those eyes with you. We will see the love, acceptance, joy and innocence. We will see Him with His eyes forever fixed upon us in love and holiness. Our eyes will meet His with your eyes as millions of the redeemed finally gaze upon our adorable Lord and I will not need to ask you then. For my questions will be answered as I see Who you saw on that day you first beheld Him.
