This Cup

If this cup be mine to drink
Then Your will be done, not my own
I know there is suffering inside
Help me to resist the temptation to run and hide

If this cup be mine to drink
Then Your will be done, not my own
Jesus through Your death I live
I need the forgiveness only Your Blood can give

If this cup be mine to drink
Then Your will be done, not my own
My soul is heavy and I'm scared
I wish from this suffering that I would be spared

If this cup be mine to drink
Then Your will be done, not my own
Jesus prayed before His death
Let me follow His example to my dying breath

If this cup be mine to drink
Then Your will be done, not my own
What will You have me do or say
My heart I give to You, I will follow and obey

If this cup be mine to drink
Then Your will be done, not my own…

Brothers and Sisters,

What is in your cup? Are you willing to follow the example of Jesus Christ by praying for the strength to complete Our Father’s will instead of yours? There are many cups to drink from in this world. There are pains we must endure.

Gospel means “Good News”. Well, the good news is this. You are not the first to taste from this cup. You do not suffer from anything that Jesus did not face. You are not alone to sip from this cup. As Our Lord did in the Garden of Gethsemane we must pray that God’s will be done not our own. We must face the temptation from the devil to give up on God’s plan and follow the “easier” path. We know what is in the cup. We know the suffering to come with it. We know that Jesus faced the same. We know that we can do so also.

Reading so many articles leading up to this Easter, the Lord has provided me with a little personal connection to Our Lord Jesus. There is nothing that we will face that ever will come close to the suffering that Jesus did for us. He faced the ultimate punishment of our sins, separation from God. In this perspective our pains seem miniscule, but they are not miniscule to us (especially during the trial), and therefore they are not miniscule to God.

What is in your cup? Today, mine is leaving my family behind for 8 months. I have prayed to be freed from drinking this cup. I have suffered anguish at the anticipation of this cup. I have faced temptation to not drink. Now I can sip knowing that God is with me. I know that my burden is light. Tomorrow, I do not know which cup I will drink from, but I know that I will not be alone to face it.

What is in your cup?

God bless.

In humble service to Our Lord,
Christian

Christian, you have become one of those special friends, and my soul is in anguish with you. Our prayers are with you, and I believe God is hearing and answering our prayers. Once in awhile a true friend comes along, sent by God, and you are one of those. May God mercifully bless you and yours.

How gracious of our God to minister to your point of need. We do all have our "cups." Please do know that as you drink willingly from yours that you are covered in prayer by many who've grown to love you, Christian. Brother Thomas has taken the words right out of my heart. You are dear to us. But our love for you doesn't come close to the love Christ has for you. And neither do our prayers come close to the intercession that's being made for you at the right hand of our Father. This I know, you are not going alone. May the God of all comfort send the Comforter in a most blessed way to your dear family as well.

Christian - The poem is beautiful. My heart aches for you. It is never easy leaving loved ones but in your situation it must be extremely difficult. I cannot imagine. You will be in my prayers. There was a couple sentences in your closing remarks that really struck me: He faced the ultimate punishment of our sins, separation from God. In this perspective our pains seem miniscule, but they are not miniscule to us (especially during the trial), and therefore they are not miniscule to God.
We, as Christians know that to be true. Never forget it. God is always with you, even when it doesn't feel like it. He is there and knows every fear you have and will help you overcome them when you call on Him. Take comfort in that. In Christ's Love,

Julia

Hello Christian. The last paragraph of "This Cup" says it all. What a CUP you are having to drink! I can almost feel your pain. To be separated from family is one of the hardest cups to drink. Thankfully, in this day and age we have telephones and internet to keep in touch. But that is not the same as being together. I know. I have had a lot of time in the past 3 years when I was separated from my husband, when he was in the hospital. But at least I could phone, and sometimes visit.... I know God will give you special grace for this difficult time in your life....You write so well. I hope you can keep on writing while you are apart from your family. That would help. God be with you.
