A Better Tomorrow

Every evening it is a ritual for my husband and I to watch the evening news. I often am disturbed about the things I hear. I often say a quick prayer and be off with my own life. The last few nights the news has been extremely painful to me. There seems to be more and more violence in the world around us. The thing that bothers me most about the recent news is the violence toward small children and innocent people. People who are being killed because they were at the wrong place at the wrong time. One man was doing his job and was killed as a husband and wife (in two separate cars) decided to take their anger out in road rage. Small children recently were given drugs to smoke as their caretakers looked on, laughing, joking and filming the act. As I sat it continued on and on. Would it ever stop? How much more violent can this world become?

God knew my heart, He knew I needed a "pick me up". One morning following this "feeling like hope is lost" time I turned to the Bible and read my morning devotion. God directed me to this scripture,

"Look! I am creating new heavens and a new earth, and no one will even think about the old ones anymore. Be glad; rejoice forever in my creation! And look! I will create Jerusalem as a place of happiness. Her people will be a source of joy. I will rejoice over Jerusalem and delight in my people. And the sound of weeping and crying will be heard in it no more. No longer will babies die when a few days old. No longer will adults die before they have lived a full life. No longer will people be considered old at one hundred! Only the cursed will die that young! In those days people will live in the houses they build and eat the fruit of their own vineyards. Unlike, the past, invaders will not take their houses and confiscate their vineyards. For my people will live as long as trees, and my chosen ones will have time to enjoy their hard won gains. They will not work in vain, and their children will not be doomed to misfortune. For they are people blessed by the Lord and their children, too, will be blessed. I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking about their needs, I will go ahead and answer their prayers! The wolf and the lamb will feed together. The lion will eat hay like a cow. But the snakes will eat dust. In those days no one will be hurt or destroyed on my holy mountain, I, the Lord, have spoken!" Isaiah 65:17-25

Wow! What a powerful picture. As I sat reading this passage, I began to vision a world without violence. No more innocent people will die, no more will babies be caught up in a fight against parents, or care givers, and die at a young age. No more will people die because someone thought it was their right to drink and drive. God renewed my hope. He showed me how life one day will be.

It says in Galatians 6:9 So let's not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don't give up. Therefore, whenever we have the opportunity, we should do good to everyone - especially to those in the family of faith". In 2 Corinthians 4:8-9, 16-18, it says, " We have troubles all around us, but we are not defeated. We do not know what to do, but we do not give up the hope of living. We are persecuted, but God does not leave us. We are hurt sometimes, but we are not destroyed. So we do not give up. Our physical body is becoming older and weaker, but our spirit inside us is made new every day. We have small troubles for a while now, but they are helping us gain an eternal glory that is much greater than the troubles. We set our eyes not on what we see but on what we cannot see..."

I can't change the world. I can't stop living. Sometimes I don't even know what to do or even how to pray. Those are the times God comes and says to me, "Don't give up. Keep your eyes on Me". I am to set my eyes on Him and not the world around me. That doesn't mean I ignore the world. I must do what I can to help my corner of the world be a little better. I am to work for the good of God's people. I am to make life better for someone else. How do I do that? God shows me and leads me. I can pray for the world. I may not know what to pray for, or how to pray, but God knows my heart and He intercedes for me.

So, as I watch the evening news once again, nothing will have changed. There will still be more violence, innocent people will die, babies will die too early, and others will mourn. I will continue to pray for each circumstance. I will know in my heart, this too, will pass, and there will come a day when all of this will be gone and forgotten. Life will be good, there will be laughter and no more tears, There will be no more sickness and death. Until then I will keep on "keeping on" for God. I will do what I can to make this world a better place for those around me.

My prayer for you this month is that you know God and He lives in you. This promise is not for everyone. This promise is for those who know God, lives for Him and allows Him to live in them. Is God's promise real for you? Are you sure of God's promise for your life? If you are unclear, then seek God while He can be found. As the verse goes in the Bible, "Seek and ye shall find, knock and the door will be opened". God bless you as you work to may your corner of the world a little better.

God bless each of you.
