The day was one we’ll never forget,
for we were an unsuspecting target.

It was a cool September morning like any other,
yet many children would soon have no mother;

So many were left with a deep, empty void inside,
most just wanted to run and hide.

A little girl never dreamed as she said goodbye
that it would be the last time she’d see her dad alive.

If that angry teenage boy had known what lay ahead
he wouldn’t have yelled at his mom, but held her tightly instead.

A young college graduate eagerly began his new career
and only minutes later was consumed with rage and fear.

I watched with horror as smoke filled the sky;
all I could do was prayerfully ask “why?”.

As I watched the panic my face felt a tear,
and I began to thank God for all those I hold dear.

Debris flew all around as dust clouds followed;
what will New York look like tomorrow?

I saw footage of the planes as they crashed into the towers,
then as officers and fire fighters worked tirelessly for hours.

Some brave rescuers made the ultimate sacrifice
as they unselfishly paid the final price.

I kept seeing the horrid images in my mind;
I couldn’t seem to leave them behind.

Yet I knew that because of God’s amazing grace,
many had moved on to a far better place.

It’s been over a year now since that dreadful day
when the bright, blue sky suddenly turned to gray.

But to those who, from this earth, were forced to depart
you won’t be forgotten; you’re forever in our hearts.
