Legendville

I built a house in Legendville,
a peaceful town, and kind;
among the green and gentle hills
of a County folks call Mind.

I bought a pristine property;
the city’s highest peak,
embossed with tall and wiry pines
ill tempered winds would creak.

The house I built was masterful
in every curve and point;
To make it strong and sturdy,
I tongue and grooved each joint.

I built it full of windows,
from the ground floor to the roof;
I trimmed the boundaries with lights—
I made it darkness proof.

Throughout the house were cedar shelves
for all my accolades;
I placed them chronologically—
my story on parade.

I then announced an open house
so everyone could see
the finest house in Legendville
and meet its owner, me.

The hour of its commencement came,
then hour three and four,
but not a soul had wandered by
to knock upon my door.

Then when the final hour passed
I pondered all alone
why no one came to visit
and praise the things I’d honed.

I guess they can’t appreciate
such skill and quality
that’s meant to motivate them
past their mediocrity.

So here’s my resolution
on their lack of gratitude;
If in the town, I’ll quaintly smile
and offer platitudes.

But never more will I invite
their common eyes to see
the tributes to my greatness
and superiority!

They’ll have stand with distant awe
and wonder what they will
about the house of glass and light
that sits up on the hill.

And thus it’s been, these many years;
I’ve live up here alone
among the tall and wiry pines
that nightly creak and groan,

with all the plaques and accolades
on cedar shelves aligned
in order of occurrence;
their glory unresigned.

I alone have given them
the laud that they are due,
for those who might have praised them
have been less than but a few.

Indeed, just one has ever come
(and, sadly, he was blind)
to visit me in Legendville
in the County known as Mind.
