I sit here alone
at the end of the day
and think of my friend
who has passed away.
I fondly remember
as I sat by her bed
she softly whispered
to me and said...
Chorus: (upbeat and lively)
"There are twelve pearly gates
in that City up there -
just name me One
and I'll meet you there.
When I arrive...
I'll wait for you
then hand in hand
we'll walk right through."
Verse #2: (soft and slow)
A little boy
who was only nine
was slowly sinking
into time.
I fluffed the pillow
beneath his head
put my hand in his
and then I said....
Chorus: (Upbeat and happy)
"There's twelve pearly gates
in that City square
Just name me one
and I'll meet you there
When I arrive
I'll look for you
then hand in hand
we'll march right through."
Verse #3: (slow delivery)
My brother fought
in a foreign land
and died on the battlefield
with this note in his hand...
"Tell my loved ones
we've got a date,
and not to forget
we'll meet at the Gate."
Chorus: Lively and upbeat
"Yes, there's twelve pearly gates
in that city up there
just name me one
and I'll meet you there;
when I arrive
I'll wait for you
then hand in hand
we'll ALL march through!
Yes, Indeed! We'll All March Through!

This poem was set to music by a composer named Kruno of Kitchner, Ontario - and on October 15, 2010 was entered into a "Songwriters Contest"...the Winning results will come out in November (2010)sometime - and perhaps the whole world will hear the words of "At The Gates" - and have Hope.
I can now add "Songwriter" to my profile...giving me a sense of pride. (Sorry, I know pride is a "no no", but it is the thought that my lyrics may be heard and be affected by the words.)

How very, very clever! If I were a song writer, I'd love to put this to music for you. I can see now some youth choirs singing this, or some popular Christian vocal groups performing it. I found myself starting to sing along and I didn't even have a melody in mind. What a creative piece of work! Just like you! A real creative piece of work! (smile)
What a neat idea, MariLyn! I'm only familiar with "Just inside the Eastern Gate...." but I don't know what other name it might go by. Since one of my beloved great-uncles carried the name of one of Joseph's sons, "Ephraim," I think that's where I will look to meet all my loved ones! Besides that, Joseph is just about my most favorite Old Testament figure. See ya there, friend!
