I wait in line with the other actors
Eyes closed afraid to breathe
A silent prayer on my lips
“Please God let it be me this time please let be me…”
The chosen few are singled out
Amid their shrieks of delight and laugher
I release my breath
I move off stage
I take my place in the wings
The show begins
You dazzle them all
Your charm, wit, your casual smile
They are captivated
I stand stage left
Your top hat and tails in hand
The scene ends, curtains close
And you stand before me
Street clothes fall
Replaced for the party scene
For a moment
Your dancing green eyes rest on me
Your radiant charm fills my very soul
“Thank you my love, you’re priceless.”
I take a breath
My lips part to utter a reply
But before I can make a sound
You’re gone
Off to stage right
With this weeks leading lady
To make your next grand entrance
I release my breath
I gather the up bits of costume
That have been left in your wake
The cast offs are mine to put back into place
I return to my station
And wait in the wings till the close of the show
Again, I wait in line with the other actors
Eyes closed afraid to breathe
A silent prayer on my lips
“Please God let it be me this time please let it be me…”
