Amazing how often we say or hear someone else say, “ I don’t know what my spiritual gifts are”, or, “I don’t have any talents.”
I was talking to my hair dresser today about my newest book, “Water to Wine, 2 Fish to a Feast”, and telling her how exciting it is to be doing God’s work.
She said, “Wow, that must be so neat. What a gift to be able to write for Him! I don’t know what my gift is, if I even have one.” Then she continued, “How did you know what He wanted you to do?”
I replied, “I asked Him, Lord, what do you want me to do with my life , and He told me to write for Him”. She said, “I just don’t think I have a talent that is a spiritual gift”.
Well, I believe at that point God started putting words in my mouth! I asked her what she likes to do more than anything else and she said, ‘Help people who need help. Like the homeless. I would really like to help and I do give them money sometimes but I would like to do more and just don’t know what more I can do.”
I said, “You know, there are lots of homeless shelters you could call in our area and just ask what kind of help they need”. Well, that really opened up some avenues. I ask what specific things she likes to do and she told me she loves to cook and of course she loves to cut and style hair.
You can probably tell what comes next—that’s right! She is going to make contact and see if she can somehow help out with cooking but the really wonderful service that she wants to work toward has to do with her very first love—hair styling.
We have an organization in town that is called The Closet. It is a place where women getting back into the work force after being out on the streets or living at the homeless shelters can go and receive career type clothing for job interviews. What my hairdresser, Mikie, wants to do is meet with these women and give them a new hair style to go along with their new clothes!! She can use her gift (talent) to help these women begin to make a brand new life for themselves. What a wonderful way to work for Our Heavenly Father.
I walked out of that shop feeling so thrilled to have been used by Our Father to help someone discover that they really have been gifted with spiritual gifts. She didn’t realize that the tender heart focused on helping those who can’t always help themselves and her talent to work with hair are some of her gifts. It will be such a joy to watch this sweet, kind woman grow into the person God has been preparing her to be. This will be a wonderful ministry she is about to start. Who knows, she may even lead others to join her on this journey.
I love it when God uses me to help others draw closer to Him and realize that He is right there beside them waiting to hear them ask, “Lord, What do you want me to do with my life?”
