My human soul was starved,
And sent my body on a mission,
It was empty, it was hollow,
It was weak from malnutrition,
It was screaming from the hunger,
And it was begging to be fed,
So I grabbed a jar of jelly,
And a half a loaf of bread,
And I ate that bread and jelly,
Until the dawn began to break,
I had jelly on my fingers,
And a dreadful stomach ache,
And yet human soul was weak,
And just as empty as before,
So I opened up the pantry,
And I sat and ate some more,
And I gobbled up the cookies,
And the peanut butter ritz,
Snicker doodles, chocolate pudding,
And I made banana splits,
Candied apples, powdered doughnuts,
And a bag of jellied beans,
I ate every thing I saw,
Until I thought I'd split my jeans,
But my famished human soul,
Was just as empty as before,
It was rumbling, it was grumbling,
Yes, it needed something more,
It was kicking up a ruckus,
For the nieghborhood to hear,
Reaching right into the church,
And Father Finney's faithful ear,
"Your soul" he said, "can not be fed,
With a simple fork and knife,
A soul is only nourished,
When it eats the bread of life,
No cookies, cake, or candies,
Ever fed a soul in need,
Such snacking only makes you sick,
And very fat indeed,"
Well I mumbled, then I grumbled,
"Bread alone could not be filling!"
But my soul was truly starving,
And the rest of me was willing,
So I stepped up to the alter,
And I ate The Bread Of Life,
No I did not have a napkin,
And I did not have a knife,
And I did not have the slightest bit,
Of jelly for that bread,
And yet it filled me up completely,
Yes, at last my soul was fed!
