'Standing on the Promises'

While serving in Home Mission areas of our nation many years ago, at some of the meetings there wouldn't be anyone available to lead the music.

I would volunteer and most usually lead the group in singing this song....
(it was the only one that I was sure I could lead).

"Standing on the promises of Christ my King,
Through eternal ages let His praises ring,
Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing,
Standing on the promises of God.

Refrain:
Standing, standing,
Standing on the promises of God my Savior;
Standing, standing,
Iím standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises that cannot fail,
When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail,
By the living Word of God I shall prevail,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I now can see
Perfect, present cleansing in the blood for me;
Standing in the liberty where Christ makes free,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord,
Bound to Him eternally by loveís strong cord,
Overcoming daily with the Spiritís sword,
Standing on the promises of God.

Standing on the promises I cannot fall,
Listíning every moment to the Spiritís call,
Resting in my Savior as my all in all,
Standing on the promises of God."
Words and Music by Russell Kelso Carter (1849-1928)

Prayer is the key to Heaven, but faith unlocks the door.
Behind the door is so much...not just Heaven for the 'sweet bye and bye'....
but for the difficult 'here and now'!

I really believe that Bible Study, Prayer and Promises are the keys that help us to be
'rich in Christ Jesus'....
or to be without them, to be poverty stricken spiritually and in many other ways.

Later in this paper, I'll share personal testimonies about how...
'Standing on the Promises' has richly blessed us.
Look at the characteristics of God's Promises:

a) GOD'S PROMISES ARE UNFAILING:
I Kings 8:56: "There has not failed one of God's good promises which He made to Moses"
Please remember...God has no favorites, just forgiven ones!

Reflect on Moses' life and the Promises of God to him and his Mother.
Also, Moses in Median at the burning bush, the Red Sea, Mt. Sinai and on and on until he went to God up in the mountain. Some of his final words were Deut. 30:15-20.
Please read these and be blessed.

b) GOD'S PROMISES ARE ASSURED BY DIVINE ABILITY:
Romans 4:21 emphasizes that we (like Abraham) can be fully persuaded that...
what God has promised, He is able to perform.

c) THE PROMISES OF GOD ARE GROUNDED IN CHRIST:
Jesus is The Door to the treasures of God.
Some of God's Blessings are general and poured out on all...
but the greatest ones are behind the door marked 'JESUS'. (John 10:7-11).
II Cor.1:20 says:
"For all the promises of God are in Him and are yes and amen (so be it) unto the glory of God."

d) THE PROMISES OF GOD ARE OF INFINITE VALUE:
II Peter 1:4 "Exceeding great and precious promises have been given to us. Through them, we can be partakers of the divine nature having escaped the corruption of this world."

Promises to the afflicted:
Psalms 30:5
Psalms 34:19
Psalms 41:3

Promises to Believers:
The key is to believe and read the Promises in the context of the passage.
Necessities (Psalm 37:3)
Unlimited blessings (Mark 9:23)
Answers to prayers (Mark 11:24)
Removal of obstacles (Luke 17:6)
Divine Sonship (John 1:12)
Spiritual fullness (John 6:35)
Spiritual light (John 12:46)

In John 14, Jesus gives us Precious Promises:
vs. 2....an eternal Home
vs. 3....reunion in Heaven
vs. 12...achievements in His Name and by His Power
vs. 13...resources to meet our needs and equip us for service.
vs. 16...companionship (Heb. 13:5 assures us that He will never leave us nor forsake us)
vs. 27-28....legacies of Hope and Peace

To me, all of the above are wrapped up in Jesus' 'I Am's'.
In Him we have:
the Perfect Revelation of God....
the Full Redemption through the Cross and His Blood...
the Everlasting Rock on which we stand....
and Full Reality....good for the real world and for people's needs.

The Promises of God are definite, so should not our prayers also be definite?
Prayerfully, search the Scriptures as a matter of daily spiritual practice.
You can prove God (Malachi 3:8-10) for back of the Word of the Lord...
is the Person and Character of God..who can not lie.
His performances will be equal to His Promises.

But as former President Jimmy Carter said, "The problem today is a crises of confidence".
He sees this in politics, public life...and maybe even in Christians.
Check it out....do you have a crises of confidence?

A friend of our's, Clarence Warner, was led by God to compile 373 devotions about....
'The Promises of God'.
He has done an excellent job on this 388 page book and I highly recommend it.

In our own lives, La Moyne and I treasure the experiences we've had in seeking God and His Promises....concerning decisions that needed to be made.

Here are 2 examples:

I've shared before about our hesitancy in moving our 4 children from Oklahoma to the Bay Area of California.

God's Promise to us was Genesis 15:12-14:
"Know of a surety that thy seed shall be sojourners in a land that is not theirs...they shall afflict them four hundred years....and afterward they shall come out with great substance."

The church called us to come as pastor and we accepted...
but the next morning we realized that we needed more assurance.

The Scripture reading in our daily devotional book ('Streams in the Desert') the next morning was: "The ark of the Covenant of the Lord went before them" (Numbers 10:33) We knew then that it WAS God's Will for us to go.

That was enough for us.....He was, is and always will be enough! (Sufficient)
We believe that if we are reading God's Word consistently and a decision needs to be made, God will give us a Promise in His Word.

Another experience came when a church asked us to come 'in view of a call' as pastor.
I asked them if we might come and spend a weekend with them.
They agreed, so we and our children spent that time with them.

I preached Friday night, Saturday night and both services on Sunday.
Following the evening service the church voted unanimously to have me come as their pastor. We were to give them an answer the following Sunday.

During that week in our Bible reading, Psalms 16 said 2-3 times, "Shall not be moved".
Though our hearts were leaning in the direction of accepting the call, after reading God's Word, we felt that He was leading us to say 'No'.

This is not 'hunt and peck' where you open your Bible and blindly point to a verse......
but 'seek and find' what God has to say. (Matt. 7:7 following)

As we were re-reading this article, we decided that we would like to share other experiences with you in future articles.
Experiences we've had concerning seeking the Lord's leadership...and how He lead us via His Word.
God Bless you as you read His Word and claim His Promises.

If you died today, are you absolutely certain that you would go to heaven? You can be! TRUST JESUS NOW

Dear Travis, there is a promise that I take a positive stand on, it is: Rom.4:13--For THE PROMISE that he would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham or to his seed through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. And: Gal.3:29--And if you are CHRIST'S then you are Abraham's seed and heirs according to THE PROMISE. Thank you for this precious article. May God bless both you and La moyne richly. Love, Sharon
