When you have the heart of Christ, volunteering is as natural as breathing. It is a visible sign of an inward reality in our lives.
I love to volunteer to do all different types of things. Stretching the gifts God has given me and offering myself and my time to others in the body of Christ is something I truly enjoy. One of the greatest volunteer experiences I have had this year was as an alternate hostess for the Women of Faith ministry.
Uncertain what an alternate hostess did, I was anxious to learn. Most of the women had been assigned specific tasks, namely ushering the speaker team to and from meals, to and from book signings, and sometimes to and from the hotel.
My assignment was less defined. As a type A, organized individual, this was a definite stretch for me! God remained faithful and taught me many things.
I did a lot of stair climbing, a lot of running here and there, delivering things to staff members, handing out radios, and checking in volunteers. I had a blast doing all of it.
God brought women together from all over our area to serve. We began our day as strangers and ended the weekend as sisters. We shared stories, prayers, and tears. Only God could weave strangers together so quickly.
Imagine being able to meet women I consider mentors in my walk with Christ. Each one is as human as they get. Not plastic people, not storytellers, real women who shared their lives like an open book. They touched my life in ways I cannot explain.
I have already signed up to volunteer again next year. It doesn’t matter where I am assigned. God has never failed to bless me and I can’t wait to see what He has in store for me!
Talking and sharing with so many women in one weekend has been the highlight of my volunteer experiences. I am able to see God in action. Volunteering is the best thing a Christian can do for others as well as themselves.
