We need to understand the importance of the word of God; Godís word is His will. In Gen 1 we see God for the first time and what is he doing; he is speaking and creating, he is making his will known and he is bringing it to pass with his words. We see what God uses His word for. We also see the divine order of God and it is reflected in his creation.
When God created the universe he didnít just think to himself Ö I think I will make somethingÖ maybe a little light over hereÖ a few planets over there and then just click his fingersÖ no! He spoke his will into existence with power. What do we learn from how God created the universe; Gen 1v1ff.
1. The words of God are containers, they contain his power, when God said let there be light there was light, the light was created and there was enough power to sustain the light from the day God created it to the present day.
Heb 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; Godís word is an expression of his power. It is not the power of his word but the word of his power, or his power is released in words. All things are held together by the word of his power.
2. Godís words also contain his will, God wanted to create something and it was expressed in words. There is no room for idle words when your words contain power.
3. Godís word contained his authority. He spoke and everything he spoke to obeyed. When God spoke he spoke with power, can you imagine every time God said let there beÖ everything in the universe rushed to carry out his commands.
Godís word still has as much power as it had when God spoke it as it is still working.
There was planning involved in everything God created, God didnít make man on day one and say now just wait until day three and I will make a bit of land for you to stand on, and then you will also have something to eat, and donít worry about the cold I am going to make a big bright light in the sky on day four so you will be nice and warm.
No, in Godís plan there was order, everything in itís proper time, just like when you have a baby, you donít wait until the baby is born and say I wonder where she will sleep or wait until she cries for the first time and say letís think about what we will get you to eat, no, you have everything ready for the birth of the baby, the cot is ready and the pram, the cupboard is full of baby food and nappies. So it was with God, only when everything was ready did he create man.
Who is this man
Gen 1:26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.
Gen 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
God created this man in his own image and likeness, breathed his living spirit into the man and then gave him the same ability to speak words.
Gen 2:19 And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought them unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that was the name thereof.
God was teaching Adam to use his words and whatsoever Adam called them that was their name.
Ps 8:4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him? 5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour. 6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: 7 All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field; 8 the fowl of the air, and the fish of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the seas.
Who is this man that God created in his own image and likeness, this man that God breathed his own spirit into, this man who was created a little lower than elohim, this man who had authority over all the earth and all the works of Godís hands, this man that God gave the same ability to speak words as he had.
Why Godís word
Godí s word is the revelation of himself, God wants us to know him and we know him through his word. Godís word reveals to us all that God has created us to have and be.
Godís word teaches us how to walk in victory, but we only walk in victory as we listen to the word. In the beginning God made man, he put him in the garden and he visited him and spoke with him. Godís plan was to teach man himself.
Gen 3v8-9 and they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden. And the LORD God called unto Adam, and said unto him, where art thou?
Right from the beginning the devil attacked the word of God because he knows that if he can get you off the word of God he will defeat you. The devil couldnít take the word from Adam, he couldnít make Adam give up the word all he could do is suggest to Adam that he get off the word and go it alone.
Gen 3:6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat.
Gen 2:9 And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. It was Eve who saw that the tree was pleasant to the eyes and good for food and a tree to be desired to make one wise.
Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil. They bought into the lie, they were already as gods in the sense that they were created in the image and likeness of God, they had Godís spirit in them, they were able to use their words and they were the ones who God had given dominion and authority in the earth to. They wanted to experience good and evil for themselves they didnít want to take Godís word for it.
Satan had gotten Adam off the word and onto his senses and he lost all the benefits of the word.
2 Pet 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
Why did Peter say that he had a more sure word? Wasnít he there, didnít he say that he saw the glory in the light, didnít he say that he heard the audible voice of God?
Look back at Adam Gen 3:1 now the serpent was more subtil than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said unto the woman, Yea, hath God said, ye shall not eat of every tree of the garden? They werenít too sure what God had said. So we have a more sure word of prophecy the written word of God. What is the difference between Godís word and other words? If you go to the dictionary you will find all the words there that are in the bible, if you read a lot of books or even the newspaper you will find there all the words that are in the bible, so what makes Godís word different? 2 Tim 3v16 God has breathed on these words. In Gen 2v7 how did God give life to man, in the same way God has breathed on these words to cause them to be alive. Heb 4v12 they are alive and powerful, they have the power to change your life. We need to begin again to understand the power and the purpose of the word of God in our lives:
1. Without the word you cannot be saved: 1 Pet. 1v23 born again by the incorruptible seed of the word of God.
2. Without the word you cannot have faith Rom 10v17 Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God
3. Without the word you cannot please God Heb11v6 without faith it is impossible to please God - you need the word to have faith
4. Without the word you cannot have direction Ps 119v105 (light is to show you where you are going)
5. Without the word you cannot walk in right standing with God Ps 119v9, 11
6. Without the word you cannot be prosperous or successful in God Josh 1v8
7. Without the word you cannot have life or health Pro 4v20-22
Godís words contain as much power as the first day he spoke them, the power is in the word, if we can learn to take Godís word by faith and speak them they will produce for us the very same way they produced for him.
Isa 55:10-11 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: 11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. Godís word is not absent of power it just needs to be spoken.
Rom 10:9-10 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.
For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
