Heaven’s Gate
By
Brenda Johnson
Synopsis – three teen-aged boys are friends – two are saved and have a personal relationship with Jesus, the third does not. The other two friends are too ashamed and embarrassed to share Christ with their friend until they all have a dream where they meet at Heaven’s Gate and the two saved boys get into heaven while their friend is sentenced to hell.
Setting: Something to signify Heaven’s Gate (Possibly painted cardboard box)– something to represent three beds (possibly fold down tables with pillows, blankets.) A table and large book for St Peter…
Characters:
Jevon, typical black inner city teen – active member of local church youth group, but not very excited about sharing Jesus with non-churched youth
Tyson – Teenager Very cool, gangsta image, very popular,
Malcolm – Typical inner city teen, wanted to witness to Tyson but was intimidated by Tyson’s image and was afraid of being put down.
Saint Peter – Looks into the Book of Life to decide who gets into heaven and what their reward will be once they get there. Deep Voice – very Authoritarian
Saint Peters’s Helper (brings St. Peter different hats upon being asked to do so)
Chorus of voices chiming in from time to time about how hot it is in hell – can be heard faintly at heaven’s gate.
Mothers of the three boys
Scene 1:
Each boy stumbles sleepily towards Heaven’s gates.
Jevon: Where am I – I must be dreaming, what’s happening
Tyson: Man, How did I get here – this can’t be no dream, I don’t dream about no dudes, I only dream about shortys
Malcolm: I was just asleep in my bed, now all of a sudden I am here – Look it says Heaven’s gate – Are we, Are we DEAD???
Tyson: Man get a grip, how can we possibly all three be dead at the same time
Jevon: Earthquake, Tornado, Tsunami – Man it says Heaven’s Gate and who is that old dude there.
St.Peter – I am St. Peter, Heaven’s gate keeper – I look into this book to see who gets into Heaven and who does not?
Malcolm: Well hook me up St Pete… I know my name is there – St Peter, look it up, Malcolm Williams – Y Y just the other, day I helped old Mrs Black take her out garbage…
St. Peter: SILENCE – I know who you are and all you have done – and all you left undone as well. Malcolm, you accepted Christ, knew all about him, yet you never told your friend Tyson.
Malcolm: I was too scared and ashamed, scared he would laugh at me.
St. Peter: Well you get in Mr. Scared and Ashamed, but you know that mansion you was always singing about….you can forget that…bring him that janitor’s hat.
Chorus of Voices: One drop of water please, it is so hot….so hot
Jevon: What about me St. Peter – My name should be in there…You know me….
St. Peter: Hmmm…Yes I know you…You accepted Christ and you even told some people about him, but tell me, why didn’t you ever tell your friend Tyson?
Jevon: Well, you know…Tyson, he was so cool and all – he just seemed too cool for Jesus.
St. Peter: (shaking his head sadly) – Well you get in, but that gold crown with all the jewels you had your heart set on – I am afraid you did not earn that kind of reward - bring me that door-opener’s hat.
Chorus of Voices: One drop of water please, have mercy, it is so hot…so hot
Tyson: Does this mean my name is not in there….Where do I go, I tried to be good sometimes…that must count for something….
St. Peter: There is but one way into heaven Tyson, faith and trust in the only begotten Son of God and, unfortunately you did not take it, so you do not make it.
Tyson: St. Peter – it is their fault – you just said it… they should be the ones punished…not me. There must be another way, I loved my mother…I stole a few things, but I never killed no body…..please…(To Jevon and Malcolm) Man why you didn’t tell me, you told me everything else but the most important thing you didn’t open your mouth…but I didn’t know…I didn’t know….
St.Peter: There were plenty of opportunities – you were just too in love with the things of the world to see them –Take him away.
Chorus of Voices: One drop of water please, have mercy, it is so hot….so hot….
Jevon and Malcom and Tyson: Please, give us another chance – please, don’t send him to hell, give us one more chance, please please……
St. Peter rubs his chin thoughtfully – Comes in front of the group of boys and snaps open a sheet.
Scene 2:
Three beds boys in separate beds – something to signify walls – Possibly poster boards used for science fair project or large cardboard boxes cut apart to resemble walls
Jevon’s mom: Boy if you don’t get up out of that bed this minute
Jevon – Sits up, feels his arms – Oh God Thank you it was a dream, it was a dream ( then he looks down at the floor and sees the door opener’s cap)…Kneels down to pray
Malcolm’s mom: You got 5 minutes to get up out of that bad and you better not be late for school again.
Malcolm: Mom I am up – I will be ready on time – sorry mom….I have to hurry I have something important to do
Malcolm’s Mom: Feels his forehead, you all right – we supposed to fight about this for at least 10 minutes….
Malcolm: Mom I am sorry for disobeying you…I know you only want what’s best for me (picking up his janitor’s cap off the floor?) Mom I gotta go, I gotta go, I got something real important to do today – I gotta get it done today….
Tyson: Kicking and saying No Please, Just one more chance…..
Tyson’s Mom – Boy what’s wrong with you…
Tyson – I just had a dream, it was so real…so real….I was so scared…Mom do you know about heaven and hell??
Just then they hear a loud knock and Malcolm and Jevon come running in….
Jevon: It was real wasn’t it, you were there weren’t you
Tyson: Tell me about Jesus…tell me everything
