This thanksgiving should be a little different than before
in that we have a little more to be thankful for
Some of us have received a new position with an increase in pay
Some of us have improved in school and make better grades
Some of us have seen certain debts removed from our way
All of us have been blessed to see the dawn of another day.
Some of us have heard those funny words that growing children say
Some of us have taken notice to a gradual growth of gray
Some have received the birth of a child and the joy that comes along
Some have grown in Godsí grace and found in our weakness He is strong
Some have lost a loved one and still suffer through the grief
Some have taken their burdens to God and in Him find relief
Some have fought the fight of faith and still hold on to their beliefs
This thanksgiving should be a little different than the one before
donít hesitate to celebrate and eat and laugh until your sore.
I think this poem is very effective in part because of it's very strict structure. The repetitive "Some of us..." is really trying to hammer home some basic understandings that we are all blessed, and you accentuate that with simple wisdom in the beginning and towards the end - enjoy this time together. A very commonplace event rendered into an effective poem, with just a touch of wry humor. Fun to read.
