BASEBALL DAYS BRING ME DOWN
by Teresa Lee Rainey (2003)
When Spring strikes out Old Winter,
I start to feel a dread.
Baseball season has arrived.
I want to hide in bed.
Thoughts of playing with my friends
Aren’t ones that make me frown.
It’s thoughts of playing baseball
That always bring me down.
I wish I could liked the game.
My friends all think I should.
But that pitcher’s really fast
And his aim, not so good.
When his fast-ball hits me,
I'll take one for the team.
I feel more like a sissy.
I really want to scream.
Coach puts me in the outfield,
Then fly balls come to me.
If only I could catch one,
How happy coach would be.
Coach holds extreme practices.
He’s teaching us to play.
One push-up for each mistake.
That's forty-eight today.
Each and every game I’ve prayed,
“Lord, help me do my best.”
Just before the game today
I’ll try a little test.
I’ll pray that God won’t even
let this day's ballgame start.
“Lord, You stop this game right now
And it won’t break my heart!”
I hear something to the east,
YES! That sound is thunder.
"It‘s pouring rain!" Coach calls out,
“Where’s this from." I wonder.
There won't be a game today.
A chance, no games all week.
I know there's great big God
who listens when I speak.
