NOTE: The Lord wrote these words in my heart as I studied the stained glass window of my church's baptistery. As I gazed upon the cross I found myself lost in the wonder of it—a sign of shame to some, a sign of life, a joy, hope, and strength to me.
I didn’t write this intending it to be a song, but I felt that it wanted to be. I realize that sounds strange, but as I was rereading it, the chorus portion came to me and then the tune. I have written music for it as well…traditional hymn in 6-8 time. As you read may you find yourself at the foot of the cross as well.
Wonderful Cross of Jesus
Verse 1
Oh, Cross, a symbol of death to some,
A sign of life to me;
My Lord did trade His life for mine,
There at Calvary.
Chorus
Wonderful Cross of Jesus,
I bow before you now,
And pray that my heart would be like His,
By His great love and pow'r.
Verse 2
Oh, Cross, a crutch perceived by some,
And yes, 'tis true for me;
I haven't strength to walk this path,
Save that which comes from Thee.
Chorus
Wonderful Cross of Jesus,
I bow before you now,
And pray that my heart would be like His,
By His great love and pow'r.
Verse 3
Oh, Cross, a burden borne by some,
A joy to bear for me;
May my life be just as my Lord's,
Bent beneath the tree.
Chorus
Wonderful Cross of Jesus,
I bow before you now,
And pray that my heart would be like His,
By His great love and pow'r.
Verse 4
Oh, Cross, a sign of shame to some,
A beacon of hope to me;
The crimson flow has washed me clean,
For eternity.
Chorus
Wonderful Cross of Jesus,
I bow before you now,
And pray that my heart would be like His,
By His great love and pow'r.
