Joseph eagerly donned his coat
Embellished with many colors
Alluding to his sense of pride
That it was unlike any others
The gift from his adoring father
Which strengthened their kinship ties
Became a point of contention
Through his brothers’ bitter cries
Favoritism can breed resentment
In the spirit of sibling rivalry
And the comfort it seems to bring
Will corrupt through satan’s bribery
Unbeknownst to Joseph
Brotherhood had turned to hate
As the coat he so adored
Would twist the chance of fate
His dreams of which he boasted
Only added to the fire
A division within the family
And a reason for vengeful ire
His brothers formed a plot
To wipe Joseph from existence
They threw him in a cistern
Hoping death wouldn’t meet resistance
In lieu of death, and avoiding guilt
They opted to keep him alive
Sold him as a slave instead
So their egos could survive
The twist of fate that came to pass
Was that Joseph did not crumble
Grace assured him ruler of Egypt
And a heart that had turned humble
Joseph now knew it wasn’t the coat
That led him to a man of stature
Instead it was obedience to God’s Will
And a respect that he would capture
Merit in our lives
means succumbing to our Maker
To faithfully Trust in His lead
And ignore our human nature
So it was the most beautiful lesson
That Joseph ever learned
His willingness to extend his mercy
For his brothers’ ills and concerns
Forgiveness means a cleansing
A refreshing of the soul
For the freedom that it brings
Is what completes and makes us whole
Like leaves among the Autumn
Changing colors against the sky
They too must die to self
And give birth when Spring comes nigh
For if trees believed their colors
Represented their great worth
Disappointment would surely follow
When bareness shields the earth
Only God has the power to reveal
The true beauty of a soul
So always walk beside Him
With Love your only goal
