NOTE: I wrote this poem the day we learned of my grandfather's diagnosis of virtually terminal cancer. He is currently taking a chemo pill in hopes of shrinking his tumor and allowing him to feel better for whatever time he has left. Praise God for his salvation and that he is eternally secure!!
Once I finished the poem I realized it related the same feelings I had when my firstborn son was born 6 weeks early and required a brief stay in the neonatal intensive care unit. It also related the feelings we had when we found out at our 20 week sonogram that our daughter's abdominal cavity had not closed and her intestines were outside of her body. The doctors could tell us nothing except what was a very wide range of possiblities, including death, so we waited and waited and waited until she was also born 6 weeks early. (I am pleased to report they are both in perfect health and doing very well!)
Fear and doubt will seize any opportunity to inhibit our faith. These are times when we must choose to believe, obey, and let God grant to us His peace in our storms, either to say to the storms, "Peace be still", or to whisper those words to our hearts as the storms rage on. Whatever you are facing in your life, I pray that through Him you will be at peace.

At Peace

Hope renewed, I lift my head
To clear, blue skies above;
Faith strengthened, joy renewed;
At peace within God’s love.

Free within this blissful state
As night turns into day,
Brightly shines the morning sun,
All worry melts away.

A rumble in the distance…
But the sun’s still shining bright.
Who knew how fast the winds would change
And bring with them the night.

For out of nowhere dark clouds appear,
Lightning and thunder crash!
The peacefulness from brighter days,
Gone! in momentary flash!

Fear swoops in and shrouds the hope
That wakened with this day.
Worry blows in with the dark
And sweeps all joy away.

There within this dreadful storm
I’m alone with all my fears.
Then, suddenly, through the darkness,
A beam of light appears.

Within this light, a still, small voice
I know I’ve heard before.
Yet, somehow, against this darkness,
His Words mean so much more.

“Don’t be anxious, do not worry;
I am with you, I am there.
I have shared in your sufferings,
I feel your pain, I care.”

A breeze of peace and comfort
Seem to blow across my heart,
But my fears gently whisper
Of the storm and of the dark.

“Fear not!” This voice proclaims,
Giving a command I must obey.
“But, my Lord,” my heart cries out,
“I am broken and afraid!”

“I know, My child,” He says,
In a whisper soft, but clear,
“You cannot bear this on your own,
That is why I am here.”

“You know My Words,” He says,
“I’ve heard you quote them back to Me.
These are the times, Dear One,
When you must choose to believe.”

“I do believe!” I cry to Him,
“In Your Words I find my strength.
I do believe! I do believe!
Oh, help my unbelief!”

“Your words are Bread and Life to me,
They are written on my heart.
Father, let them bring forth light
To chase away this dark.”

“You are Creator of all flesh,
Nothing is too difficult for You!*
With You all things are possible!**
Your Word is powerful and true!”

“Ah, yes, Beloved,” my Father said,
“This is the evidence of your faith.
Remember, dear weak and feeble one,
Faith is My gift of grace.”***

Hope renewed, He lifts my head,
Dark clouds still loom above,
But faith is strengthened, hope renewed,
At peace…hand in hand with God.

So, though the dark clouds linger,
Though they linger evermore,
They’ll be banished from all memory,
When we stand on heaven’s shore.

This is so beautiful. There is just something about a poem that comes to life when it's birthed from true life experiences. It is so heartfelt and it always shows. God Bless you and your family. Un Christ's Love, Julia

Laura, my heart goes out to you, as I read this. It brought back remembrance of the feelings I went through when my grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, and brother went to be with the Lord. You have written beautifully and lovingly. May God bless and keep you and yours, and my prayers are sent to heaven on your behalf.
Thomas
