The night in deepest blue
Has slowly settled in.
How peaceful is the sky;
How calm my soul within.
About an hour ago
I watched the sun go down;
The sky was robed in splendor
Above her golden crown.
A fire of orange and scarlet
Had spread across the sky,
Capped by a sea of violet
That tossed its waves on high.
And soon the sea descended
To put the fire out,
‘Til the last rays of sunlight
Were gone without a doubt.
Our lives could end like this,
As day turns into night:
A fire and then the darkness,
A stifling of all light.
But, lo, the planets one by one
Have lit their lamps across the sky.
As jewels upon the firmament
They wink and gleam before the eye.
Perhaps the reason God made stars
To pierce the deepest blue
Is to affirm that Heaven remains
When life on earth is through.
For who could glimpse the stars at night
And still a doubter be
That God exists and rules the earth
Through all eternity.
