Thirty Second Comedies

If there is one type of television commercial that causes my blood pressure to slightly rise, it is the typical beer commercial that shows the most physically fit individuals surrounded by bottles of beer just seconds away from consumption. Usually these men and women with washboard abs are just finishing a game of flag football or beach volleyball. Beer commercials like the ones I just described may be one of the most misleading and deceptive creations ever put on television.
Great athletes work hard to become the best at what they do. Even weekend warriors with six-pack abs are not guzzling down six-packs of Budweiser ® after every hour or two of hard play. But never mind the facts, young people who see these commercials are often lulled into thinking that athletics can be taken to the next level with a few brewskies added to the menu.
Now I’m not saying there are not professional athletes who do drink occasionally or occasionally drink too much. But what I am saying is that the beer commercials make such activity seem the norm.
After watching countless beer advertisements like Miller ® beer’s “It’s Miller ® Time” ad, it has almost ingrained in the general population that people must go out and have a drink after every moment of great accomplishment. “I got that report done the boss needed two days early. ‘It’s Miller ® time!’” “Our hockey team just beat our rival, the Kansas City Southpaws! Guess what time it is?”
Is there any other way to really celebrate victory than hanging out with in a bar filled with cigarette smoke, inebriated friends, loud acquaintances, and even strangers? Going out for pizza or ice-cream just doesn’t reach that level of celebration the beer commercial demands.
Here is how I see these “athletes always suck down a cold one after the big game": I picture them as 30 seconds of comedy. It has made them much more bearable.
