How loud must God speak to gain one’s attention? Are our lives so busy that we are not taking time, “to be still and to know that I am God?” Do we have a Martha attitude and miss out by not sitting to learn? Or are we like Mary? Who sat at Jesus’ feet, attentively listening?

Before one can become a child of God. They first must hear the voice of God talking to them through the preaching of the Word. “So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. “ Romans 10:17. (KJV) “How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed ? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard ? and how shall they hear without a preacher ?” Romans 10:14.

As the Word is presented the Holy Spirit aids the unbeliever to spiritually hear and understand. Without the Holy Spirit, Satan blinds their eyes and deafens their ears because he doesn’t want them to hear the good news of the Gospel. II Corinthians 4:4 states: “The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers, so that they cannot see the light of the gospel…” (Today’s International Bible.)

John 3:16 is the gospel. “For God so loved the world. that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth on him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” The chains of sin are broken and all things become new according to II Corinthians 5:17. “Therefore, if any man be in Christ he is a new creature; old things are passed away; behold all things become new.”

As an adopted child of God one is eager to learn and to develop their relationship with Jesus. Their ears stay attentive by hearing and reading God’s Word through prayer and personal devotions. Growth continues by attending church with other believers and hearing the Word taught

With growth comes trails and testing to fortify their faith. During these hard times it’s easy to drift back into the ways of the world. Satan attacks with discouragement. The new believer may feel as if they are not accomplishing anything and God seems a million miles away. They tend to float back into their old familiar life style. But God lovingly watches over His child and will only let them stray so far.

At first God may converse gently to His child through another believer. God may prompt others to pray for this new believer. Yet the disobedient child continues drift.

As time passes with the deafening distractions of the world God’s voice becomes louder. Yet no response and His heart aches for this wayward child. He longs to have fellowship as before.

As events unfold within the life of the prodigal child, other mature believers “see the hand of God reaching for His child. To draw him back into the security of His love and protection.

Finally, God may take bleak actions to catch the attention of His child and to lovingly restore the broken relationship. CS Lewis states,” God… shouts in our pains:” He may use an accident or an illness to cause the prodigal child to come to his senses and to ask for forgiveness.

When God hears the prayer of forgiveness and restoration, He rushes to embrace His accepted, loved and forgiven child.
