I have so much stuff, its unbelievable. Whats even more amazing, is that most of my stuff has been given to me. A few nights ago, my mother in law brought me a lot of baby toys from a nursery that has recently closed down. I already had so many toys, and that night I couldnt fit them all in the closet. I went through all of Katy's toys and put the ones she didnt use in boxes. The problem was, that there was no room for the boxes either. I set the toys aside for later give away and went to bed.
My house was so over crowded with things I couldnt use. My pantry, for example, had been full to overflowing with lots and lots of food. Two huge jars of peanut butter, several loaves of bread, more ham than I could finish, coffee, etc. Katy also had so many clothes that it was ridiculous. Its actually so many, that she never seems to wear the same thing twice. By the time she has gone through all the wardrobe in her closet, she has moved on to a different size. Although I am saving the nicer things for my sister and close friends when they have chlidren, I have had the need to make room NOW.
The following morning, a very poor woman showed up at my door. She was the mother of two little girls. One was only six months old. She was accompanied by her mother. I heard them knocking and proceeded to open the door.
"I was wondering if you could spare-" she intrrupted herself when she saw my daughter on her swing.
"You wouldnt happen to have extra baby toys or clothes?" She asked eagerly.
"Oh, you bet!" I answered, "Ill be right out!"
I came out with the first box. It was filled with toys. The older little girl (who was probably four or five years old) made a mad dash for them. She was wearing a huge grin on her face as she pulled out a brand new, fluffy teddy bear. Immediately, she hugged it to her chest. Her mother and grandmother had sparkles in their eyes.
"Give me five minutes and I will go through the clothes for you," I said.
I went through Katys boxes of clothes and sorted through them quickly. Naturally, I wanted to save the best little outfits for my sister and my friends. I gathered up a box of baby clothes, hats and shoes and walked back out. Not a second later, the young momma was pulling out the clothes.
"Look!" she told her little baby "Look at your new shoes!"
She began to put the little clothes on her tiny daughter. The baby didnt understand what was going on, but was caught up in the excitement as well. A minute later she was dressed and even had a hat on to protect her from our scorching, mexican sun.
"You wouldnt happen to have a few diapers to spare?"
I went in and grabbed a bunch and came out to her again. The old diaper was removed and the baby was changed right out in my front porch. I wondered how long that little baby had worn a soiled little diaper. It was just after lunch time, and the woman had one last request.
"Did you have any food left over from your lunch today?"
I did, but only three quesadillas. That was only one per person, and not enough to satisfy. I gathered the quesadillas, made a guacamole, pulled out a loaf of bread, peanut butter, a pack of ham, lots of coffee and I cant remember what else. It was another box, full of food. When I came out with it, the women began to devour the bread plain, right out of its bag. They repeated "thank you" with their mouths full, a million times as they packed up their many boxes and set out to go.
And so it was, that what I had to spare, supplied the need of another family. To think, they came right to my door...
