THE PARTING OF THE RED SEA…POEM
© James P. Gram
Exodus 14
In Pharaoh’s land called Egypt
Through suffering, toil and tears;
The Israelites were captive there
Four hundred and thirty years
Then God called Moses, Aaron too
To make his people free;
But Pharaoh’ heart was hardened
With his hate and enmity
Ten plagues it took for God to make
The Pharaoh to agree;
“We’ll let the Israelites depart
From bondage set them free”
And so the Israelites set off
And camped close by the sea;
Up against the wilderness;
They thought that they were free
But God then hardened Pharaoh’s heart
“They’re in an awful mess;
The Red Sea has them blocked ahead;
Around them wilderness”
“Let’s go and bring them back up here
They’ll serve us once again;
We’ll take six hundred chariots
Six hundred horse and men”
His chariots chased the Israelites
A mighty army horde;
But these Egyptians soon would learn
The power of the Lord
The Israelites looked up and saw
This fast approaching sight;
They knew they didn’t have a chance
Against the Pharaoh’s might
They were afraid, and so they asked
“If Moses would explain,
Why he had led them out to die
On this deserted plain?”
“Better serve Egyptians
While suffering in distress;
Than dying in this dreadful land
This fearful wilderness”
But Moses said, “My people,
Stand still and do not fear;
Today the Lord will fight for you;
There’s even more to hear”
“Egyptians that you see today
Will disappear from sight
So hold your peace, for God will save
His people with his might”
An angel cloud out front had shown
The Israelites the way;
But now it stood between the camps
And made both night and day
It made the Pharaoh’s army side
Darkness just like night;
But daylight on the other side
Gave Israelites clear sight
The Lord then said to Moses,
“Go forward to the Sea
And stretch your rod across the deep
Divide it, don’t you see?”
The Lord then sent a strong east wind
That pushed the waters high
In mighty walls on either side;
And made a roadway dry
The Israelites then walked into
The middle of the sea;
But Pharaoh’s army saw this sight
“Do not let them flee”
So Pharaoh sent his chariots,
His horses and his men,
Into the sea, in hot pursuit
But here’s what happened then
The Lord took off their chariot wheels
This slowed them down, you see
“God’s fighting for the Israelites
We think that we should flee”
Then God told Moses, “Stretch your hand
Across the sea; and then
The waters will return and drown
The Pharaoh’s horse and men”
All Pharaoh’s chariots, all his men;
Not one survived the sea;
The Israelites went safely on
To praise God thankfully
The Lord had saved his people from
Both bondage and disaster;
They honored Moses, feared the Lord
And believed He was their Master
