'Tis unspoken words penned on a scroll,
The symphony heard in a lone Poet's soul,
Or a flood of emotion like the ocean waves roll...
Ah, this is poetry!
'Tis the blush on the cheek of an innocent Miss
Whose heart beats wildly at love's first kiss.
O such passion and ecstasy this!
Ah, the love of poetry!
'Tis the look of adventure in a young sailor's eye
As he scans the horizon where ocean meets sky.
One backward glance to bid home a good-bye...
Ah, the thrill of poetry!
'Tis the cry of a heart now shattered by grief,
The life of a child so dear, yet so brief,
A memory that haunts with no sign of relief...
Ah, the sorrow of poetry!
'Tis pain... a deep, unyielding sorrow
That blots out all hope of each tomorrow
And finds no joy to beg or borrow...
Ah, this too is poetry!
'Tis the fear that smothers and takes thy breath,
Of approaching footsteps of a certain death,
And the courage that rises from beneath thy breast...
Poetry! Give me poetry!
'Tis a faith that's brave enough to cry
And wavers not when no reply
Comes to countless questions "why?"...
Thank God, thank God for poetry!
'Tis a heavenward gaze toward distant hills,
Abiding faith that calms and stills,
A songbird's praise from my window sill...
Poetry, poetry, poetry!
'Tis verse that dances to life's joyful song,
Yet mourns o'er death and pain and wrong,
Where tears and laughter both belong
And noble thoughts grow sure and strong...
Poetry! Ah, blessed poetry!
