I am suspicious of those who smile so readily after tragedy,
And I don’t mean
the accidental joke,
that cracks the corners of the mouth…
…Surprises us in the center of our tears,
Those who tell me how their “mourning was turned to gladness”
By the “great cloud of witnesses”
Who prayed their pain away,
And propped them up
And set their dial back on “normal”.
I am suspicious that God does not work that way.
I am suspicious that the real work of healing
I am suspicious of those who “get through sorrow quickly”
I am suspicious
That their fall will be great
That their sadness will be doubled
And their pain magnified
In another scene in life.
The real work of healing
Takes an eternity
Of tears and pain and work and weakness and anger….
I suspect I am on the right road.
