fell on a Tuesday this year.
It was the day
my
more-than-a-daughter
daughter
went to heaven.
I was in the living room
with a new friend.
We were keeping busy,
keeping me busy,
with busy things,
and
when we paused
from our prattle,
the room was still
for a moment.
The baby was asleep,
the rest of the household was peaceful.
From the far left corner of the room
my friend and I heard music.
I recognized the song....
not a particularly important song to me....
but
the song was
"Lara's Theme"
from Dr. Zivago.
The notes lifted from
a broken music box,
more than vintage,
almost antique by now.
Only the bottom,
the silver bottom
that contained the music box remained.
Sitting on three feet
on a corner of my desk
in the far left corner of the room
in the still of one moment
on the day she died
music lifted
without aid
into the air
and touched our ears.
We looked at each other.
We paused
together.
I said to my friend,
"That music came from a broken music box."
"Strange", she said,
and I think she became very nervous.
I thought to myself.....
