"Anyone who loves his father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." Matthew 10:37-39

You may be saying, "Um...yeah...that's seems kinda harsh." Jesus is not being harsh here. He's simply saying that the heart of a true disciple of his will have a love and devotion to him that far outshines the love that he has for his family, and the people dearest to him.

Laying down your life for His sake means that you are willing to leave behind any dreams or plans that you have in life - to follow Jesus. En reality, true disciples are not losing anything - they gain everything! The most important things in this world are not the things we own or the plans that we make. Our objective, as disciples of Jesus, is to be near him, to know his heart and to follow wherever he leads.

Are you a true disciple? Do you really love Jesus?

"If you love me, you will obey what I command. Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." John 14:15, 21

A disciple must recognize that Jesus is his Lord, who deserves our love and obedience. He is not a harsh master, he is gentle, loving and compassionate. But at the same time, he demands our undivided attention.

Are you loving Him today? Do you know his commands? Are you obedient and ready to lay down your life for his sake at any moment? He's already laid his life down for you - the greatest gift of all.
