At the top of a church bulletin: "Guaranteed 20 minute sermon or your
next one's free."
Unfortunately, Christianity is tainted with much tradition, myths,
speculation, and too-much reading between the lines to make Scripture
say what we want it to say. As a result, it is fraught with man-made
legalistic rules and hangups. Sometimes I wish I could go off to a desert
island with nothing but my Bible and let God talk to me without all of
man's misconceptions and distractions.
What kind of church or denomination are you associated with? Is it
helping your growth with God or impeding it? If I don't get good food
at a restaurant, I go somewhere else. I'm not advocating church
hopping, but if your soul isn't being fed, you need to go somewhere
where it is. You've heard the expression, "If Momma ain't happy,
nobody's happy." Well, if your soul isn't happy, the rest of you isn't
happy either. It will affect your attitude and demeanor. A church that
really feeds your soul is a genuine delight. Give it all the support that
Make sure you have a church with a positive message of redemption
through Christ. If you sense that a major thrust of the church is a
pharisaical pride in what they don't believe or allow, then that is a
negative group that you don't need in your life.
You need a church where you can do this: Col. 3:16 (nlt), "Let the
words of Christ, in all their richness, live in your hearts and make you
wise. Use His words to teach and counsel each other. Sing psalms and
hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts. vs 17: And
whatever you do or say, let it be as a representative of the Lord Jesus,
all the while giving thanks through Him to God the Father." That's the
way it should be. Right?
