To repent or not to repent. That is the question.
Whether ‘tis nobler in the mind to suffer
With kings and pharaohs the eternal flames of Hell.
Or to seek refuge in the arms of the Almighty
And by repenting, find forgiveness of sin and live.
Unlike before, by a prayer of faith He will end
The cycle of sin and death, the impurity
That flesh is heir to. ‘Tis a transformation
Devoutly to be wished. To die to self,
To live, to die no more. Ahh, there’s the catch!
For in this hope of life eternal, what joy may come!
When we have cast off this mortal coil,
It must give us pause to stand in the presence of God Almighty.
To ponder by what means forgiveness can be bestowed us.
For He did bear the whips and nails through hands.
He took our wrong and was punished in our place.
Oh the price of sin, the depth of love, the law’s been paid.
The accusations of sin against us shall be erased
If true repentance be found in our hearts.
He Himself could have left us to justice.
What but His amazing grace would compel him to die for sinners?
What foolish fellow I would be, were I to ignore this grace.
But I dread the reproach of my kinsmen and friends.
Were I to surrender my soul to the Giver of Life as to a king
Would I be scorned? ‘Tis a puzzle of the will
For the fear of persecution shall I bear the price of mine own sin?
Or fly to the unmerited mercy of Christ?
Thus conscience does make sinners of us all.
So with a contrite heart I pray for forgiveness.
To be born anew as Your child Lord, oh the thought!
It is now that I embark on this enterprise. In this moment
With me just as I am, I come and surrender to You.
If in forsaking my sin, I lose my friends – So be it
Jesus, You are God as man, my life and my soul are in Your care
And I know that through Your blood my sins shall be remembered no more.
