Impress Me: A free-verse poetic essay against Religionese

"Religionese" is the tongue of the pseudo-intellect. Simplicity is the speech that speaks soul to soul.

~ Wendy Stewart Hamilton

Have you ever watched someone who speaks religion-ese - oh the praises fly off their tongue indeed. But do they travel far -their words I mean - or do they fall on deaf ears?

"Who do they think they are impressing?" I think. When I see someone on the brink of making a grievious mistake of alienating "those less religious than you".

I fear, its near, the time when those religious will cry with big words and loud voices, but there will be no world left to hear. They've turned away to more simpler play - discontent in listening...one more minute...to something that seems...well, a bit hollow and not authentic.

Only God can judge the heart, but oh, when those big words roll, I find myself in disbelief wondering if speakers are blind to their absent connection? Our job is not to sit on preachin' street, with Christians under our feet hanging onto our every word. "Amen, brother" "Amen, sister"....yet not a sinner in sight to hear a word.

Broad and narrow, straight as an arrow piercing the heart and soul of God. "You rob me blind with words deep and wide and words of a flowery kind. Don't you realize I called you to be something more simple...something more insignificant be."

"Come unto me all who are dog-tired and I will give you rest. Come unto me like little children; I speak their language best. I'm right to the point, without the flubber - I am God and there is no other...like me, you see. I am One. Simple. Word."

"I am LOVE."

~ Wendy Stewart Hamilton

Facts that should factor into our speech:

Over 80% of the most commonly used and understood words in the English Language are one syllable.

The majority of people read and comprehend at an 8th grade reading level.

Excellent, and so true. I find myself sometimes forgetting that not everyone understands the phrase used often - 'born again.' One suggestion I have for the piece is to format it a bit differently. I found myself pausing at certain intervals. Thanks for the reminder!
