GOD SAW THAT THE LIGHT WAS GOOD, AND HE SEPARATED THE LIGHT FROM THE DARKNESS. (NIV)
Here God sees that the Light is good, it will work to sustain life.
God separates the Light from the darkness. He actually makes a distiction between them
JOHN 1:5 THE LIGHT SHINES IN THE DARKNESS, BUT THE DARKNESS HAS NOT UNDERSTOOD IT. (NIV)
I JOHN 1:5 God is light, in Him is no darkness at all.
Physically speaking God now separates the day from the night. For the first time an observer from the Earth's surface could detect the cycle of day and night. When all of the Earth's surface was completely dark, no means existed for marking time. Now this has changed as light makes its way to Earth's surface.
Spiritually, we see here that light and darkness do not exist together. They are set apart from each other.
This is also a good picture to what happens in our lives when God comes in.
Before God touchs our lives they are completely dark. Then, God's spirit hovers over this darkness and says "LET THERE BE LIGHT" and there is light. This light changes our lives.
